    Does anyone have any advice re;

    1) Is it beneficial (i.e. will it make you faster) for an olympic distance triathlon to do a course of creatine for a couple of months in advance?

    Not really no.

    It will probably make you retain water and make you heavier.
    It won't really be relevant to your training as you are unlikely to be doing the serious weight work that creatine is benefical for.

    I have used it in the dead of winter for gym work before but outside of this I'd steer clear IMHO.

    Creatine will make you stronger, leaner and quicker to recover but only training will make you go faster.
    There is some weight gain so you have to look at your body shape and size. What are your current limiters? If its strength and power, then creatine might be for you. If its the 15kg of fat hanging around your waist, poor diet and lack of training, like the new me, then you should look elsewhere. There are no quick fixes.
    There are to my knowledge no large studies on chronic creatine use of longer than two months so approach with caution.
    My advice would be to concentrate on your limiters first. this is free and will make you go faster.
    Re-assess at the end of the season and if you see London 2012 on the horizon hit the creatine!!
    For mere mortals like myself, it would be best to hold off until next pre-season and incorporate it into your two-month base training period but only if you are hitting the weights and want to put on muscle.

    A lot of confusion exists in the area of supplementation. Endurance athletes dont need to supplement as much as body-builders.

    Creatine is good but according to Bernard Donne at Trinity we get enough of it in normal portions of meat in a normal diet (don't know about vegetarians). We don't need to supplement with lots of creatine. Apparently there were some studies which found that creatine supplementation produced great results in strengthening muscles in octogenarians who had trouble holding, say, a cup of tea (excessive shaking/trembling).

    Like the others have said, work on all your other limiters.
