Has anyone had a ganglion cyst removed? How long is the recovery period? Would you be out of work for a few days? Did it reoccur?

Hi, I had one removed from my ankle a couple of years ago, I was out of work for about a week, was slightly painful, but I took plenty of tablets for it!
Yes it did re-occur, a year later, and I got it removed again. Also because where my cyst was located I had to get a full anaesthetic for the op.

I had one on my wrist, which the surgeon squished and burst. It came back and then I had it removed. It hasn't come back since.

It was a bit painful, but not that bad. I did have to have a general anaesthetic though. Recovery time is about a week.

    Nothing to worry about.

is it in a location likely to make writing difficult?

I had a large ganglion cyst removed from the underside of my right hand five years ago at the Blackrock Clinic. I was out of work for about two weeks. I had a full anaesthetic, and there is a visible scar. I had a back slab plaster or paris fitted.
the stitches were removed by the surgeon about a week later. I then had six weeks of intensive physio in the Blackrock clinic. The cyst never came back and it was benign.

based on that and Katie99's post I'd recommend waiting until after exams if possible

    EDIT: just personal opinion...

    Hi folks

I have another q on the cyst, i got it removed, exams are done and im in for my post op thing next week, before i hear some BS from the specialist, can anyone give a bit of advice or what happened in yer own experience....

I was put under general for it so have no idea what happened in the theatre r that, the scar is nearly an 's' shape and thers still quite a large bump on it. Its a diff shape to the original cyst alrite but i swear if it wasnt for the scar id question that they did anything? Some one said this might be scar tissue but then someone else said that doesnt appear this quick.

Ive no medical knowledge at all - as uve already guessed, but does anyone know anything about this??? Im afraid that when i go in again theyll say its perfect normal and i dont know if it is?

    Hi there,

I had a small op to remove skin cancer a few years ago and the scar was as you describe, bumpy, raised out etc immediately afterwards. This was because, when you remove something from beneath the skin, the skin had to overlap to be stitched shut and was therefore raised and uneven. This evened out over time and while it was undulating to begin with it's now perfectly smooth with just a hairline scar. The skin and tissue beneath has been traumatised so it'll just take a little time for things to "settle out"

Also - my mother had a ganglion cyst on her hand - it was there for a couple of years and her doctor recommended leaving it be unless it was bothering her and it would just go away by itself - it did. Hopefully yours won't return - all the best :)

I had one for a few years on my wrist, just a small one thankfully, and it went away by itself. I was freaked out that it just disappeared! Didn't know they could do that!!!

    Hi Triny,

Wll I had about 6 weeks physio in the Blackrock Clinic after the op. My scar is still quite visible and there is a dent in the area where the surgeon removed the ganglion.
I was told it was huge and they had to cut through tendons on the underside of my right wrist to fully remove it. The doctors and nurses told me afterwards it was huge and looked like a bunch of grapes.
Five years on, I have no trouble with the scar, although it does get a bit taut during the winter when it is cold.
But they did an excellent job.

I have a ganglion on my hand that appears & reappears a few times every year. I was advised by the doctor to have nothing done with it as it is not harmful & doesnt really hurt, apart from looking a bit odd.

OP - make a list of questions to ask before you have your appointment & make sure you go through them all and get your answers. If you're still not happy ask them if you can make a further appointment in a few weeks to review the progress again.

Thanks folks il see how i get on, just didnt wanna be fobbed off with 'itll be fine next week' kinda thing and this lump to still be here next year.

The reason i got it done is, that i had exams at christmas and was constantly writing and typing and basically always using my hand and was in quite a bit of discomfort (I was always very aware of the cyst but wudnt say screaming pain or that more twinges or throbs) i think it was that i was working during the day and then classes at night so there wasnt much resting it so it never stopping being there, and well i didnt want that again at the next set of exams!

Fingers crossed it doesnt come back, i havent heard from the hosp at all since and wasnt filled with wisdom before i left so wudnt say much for the aftercare but mayb all will be settled after the appointment.

Thanks again for the help. :)

I had one on my wrist / hand and the doctor just injected it and took all the gunk out... It was fine the next day and has never come back.

Hi OP! I had a ganglion cyst on the back of one of my wrists for ages when i was about 11. I wouldn't go in one evening for my mother so she frogmarched me into the house rather swiftly, and I whacked the back of my hand off the door knob. The cyst burst painlessly, though the back of my hand went purple for a while. It never came back:D. I have heard that whacking em with a heavy book works, up to you!

I had one on my knee. I play a lot of sport and was worried it was something bad. Had an MRI fully covered on the Health Insurance and it proved it was nothing. Before I had a chance to have anything done with it, it kind of exploded when I tore my ACL and MCL playing ball :pac: So, if you want a quick fix to your ganglion try something drastic like a book or hammer but if you want to be sensible visit you Doc and do it right. I suggest the latter. Good luck :D

Lol at last two posts. I was with my GP for something else and I brought up this lump on my wrist which had been worrying me. She told me it was a ganglion cyst. She said it was also known as a bible bump as the treatment in the past was to put your hand (or whatever) down on the desk and the doctor would thump it with the bible - it was the biggest and heaviest book available at the time :D

I have a second one on my knee which is causing a lot of pain at the moment - I may need to get it sorted. I wonder would the bible bash trick work for an athiest?

The doc said if its hurting you or causing discomfort then get rid, how u want to do it is up to you! Use the bible, or have it cut out, you can also get them drained but i was told in about 70% of cases they come back from that!

    Worth checking out though?
