The Emerald Garrison are All-Ireland based and are the largest and best Costume Club in the country.

    Check them out on www.irelandgarrison.com

Would just like to make this clear..I was just wondering if anyone has costumes...I'm not looking for members of a group such as the emerald garrison or any other licensed organisation. tks, just some people who have outfits and would maybe want to put them to some use.

The EG isn't "licensed" - we're just a bunch of people with outfits that like to put them to good use - but we don't profit from it. Money raised goes to various charities.

Ok..Thing is I original opened this thread to see if there was people around with outfits to do parties etc..Rouge T suggested contacting the EG, But you can see in my post response, I was aware that the EG only do charity gigs and that. Anyway..I thought it no harm to try and join the EG as it would be great craic to be part of the group, as well as helping raise some funds for a good cause into the bargain..so I tried to register, I then was told by by the EG that if i just want to join to make money!!..I was looking in the wrong place. Really dont know how they came to this conclusion..as my thread is quite clear on what i was asking about, frankly I'm pretty annoyed at their attitude. Just got mail from EG saying they cant accept me as a member..as any work on the "side" or any such (highly illegal!) little ventures by me would infringe copyright if i had become a member of EG. That's fair enough, but again I have to say their response to be me where very insulting.

I think you need to understand that the EG has worked hard to build its reputation and is very protective of it. If any member was to be found to be making financial gain in breach of Lucas Arts policies the Garrison would bear the brunt of it and we work too hard for our charities for this. NO insult intended, we are a non profit group and all members must accept that we must remain so. If you dont like it, then dont join, if you want to be a part of the best star wars costuming club in Ireland and indeed the UK, then forget the"sheckels" and you can join up.

I'm afraid that it's not just joining the EG and then doing paid gigs that will infringe copyright...

Making money from appearances as anyone from the Lucasfilm stable is illegal. Obviously, that extends to all copyrighted characters, it's just that Lucasfilm tend to be pretty enthusiastic about pursuing people who do things like this. It is how George made most of his money after all.

If you thought a reply from the EG seemed rude or hostile, you perhaps don't really know a great deal about the Star Wars costuming community. These are folks who spend thousands of pounds getting movie accurate costumes just because they're fans.

It's not untrue or unfair to say that people with second rate costumes who charge for appearances cheapen the work that people like the EG do and bring the wider community into disrepute.

I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the reality of what you're proposing.

:) Just because a costumes is lacking a few bits and bobs, doesn't make it second rate. The English based group 'Heroes for hire' seem to do ok, as they do star wars themed weddings and parties.

From the heroes for hire site...
Heroes 4 Hire in run by costume members with no profit

All fees are to cover travel times & expenses there is

    NO APPEARANCE FEES

I would prefer to see smiles on kids faces or money going towards less fortunate adults and children rather than Euro's in my pocket to be honest.

The whole idea of the SW costuming community is to share the magic of Star Wars with everyone and to try to contribute to charities etc through the interest created by the costumes. The idea behind the costumes is that what the public see is an "exact" replica of what is seen on screen. Its as if the character has just walked off the film set.

I guess theres nothing stopping an individual from going out and just buying a cheap costume and charging to turn up at a kids birthday but theres a certain feeleing that can only be had by knowing that the smile on the face of the kid or adult is there and pure, without any cash etc crossing hands.

Again, the reference to cheap costumes. It wasn't like I was trying to organise a bank robbery, or to raid an old folks home!..I had just got a costume recently and was eager to start using it..it was more about using it in a context rather than making money.
