This might sound like a stupid question but how much memory should 5 feature length movies & 3 music videos take up in a 30G ipod video?

I have one & my memory is taken up as follows

    Audio 5.39G
    Video 2.92G
    Photos 561MB
    Other 10.09G

I'm presuming that the movies are stored in Other and not Video.
I can't think of anything else on it that would take up that much memory.

Thanks in advance (and forgive the ignorance!!) :o

Well, I deleted 3 movies from the ipod & the Other folder still contains 10.09G. Anyone any idea what could be taking up this much memory if it's not movies?

Not 100% sure on this, but I think that Other contains data saved by apps. Have you downloaded videos or music from within any apps?

If not, have you tried rebooting / syncing the device in case they're temp files that need clearing out.

Have you copied anything onto the ipod not using itunes? I used to use my ipod as an external drive and if you copied anything onto it that way it would show up as "Other"

Do ye mean did I download files using the likes of mininova or one of those sites? Well then, yeah, I downloaded from one of them a couple of years back.

@ lackofcoulour. Do you mean have I tried restoring factory settings on the ipod?
I haven't because I wiped it before & am afraid of my life of doing the same again!!!

This is probably your answer. Have you dragged and dropped anything onto the iPod without using iTunes?

I could have in the past alright. Is there a way to correct it I wonder. But I wouldn't have dragged & dropped 10G worth of content.

Ignore my comments above. I assumed you were using an iPod touch. Doh!

Click into the iPod using Windows Explorer (PC)/Finder (Mac) and see what files/folders are in the root directory. If you see any non-system related folders (loose music/videos for example) in here then that's probably your problem.

Will do, mailforkev, and I'll get back to you with my findings!!

    Thanks

I plugged in the ipod last night and there seems to be a problem with it now. It is asking me to restore the settings on it. That's the only option I'm getting when I plug it in. If I click the "restore" button does that then wipe the ipod of all it's contents?

Yes. Its corrupted by the sound of it. The restore will wipe the drive then install the last good backup again. I've had to do this before.

By "the last good backup" do you mean the last backup I did or does it automatically backup itself from time to time?
