97 Polo Problem

    Hey,
My mate has a 97 Polo and has been having a problem for a while now. Every time she is in first gear the car just cuts out. Like she pulls up to traffic lights and is at a complete stop waiting for lights to change and all of a sudden the battery symbol lights up on her dash and the car is off....

Does anybody have any experience with such a thing happening?

She has brought it to a mechanic etc and paid a good bit to get it repaired. Now all that happened is it doesn't do it as often but is still doing it sometimes.

    Anybody any suggestions?

It sounds like the warm air pipe is broken/disconnected. Basically this is a pipe connects to a cowl over the exhaust manifold and allows warmer air to be drawn into the intake system. If the air is too cold it can cause the engine to cut out especially as approaches idle from overrun.

Have a look at this pipe and inspect it for tears, poor fitting, etc.

Another cause is a dirty throttle body - this is a common problem on smaller VW petrol engines.
