Butane or propane for bbq

    Hi all,

    Not sure if anyone can help but sure I'll ask anyway.

    We were given a smallish bbq last year that we have not used yet. We're gonna crack it out this weekend. I know it doesn't take normal gas, it takes either butane or propane (I cant remember which).

    Firstly, does anyone know if it would be either propane or butane (i.e. is one of them definately unuseable) or could it be either. I can have a look tonight but I'd like to get a cannister on my way home from work.

    Secondly, does anyone know where you can buy these cannisters? I think most garages only sell gas cannisters.

    Garages, hardware store, outdoor shops and maybe supermarkets depending on the exact type.

    The difference in fuel wouldn't matter too much, more important to make sure you get a canister with the right connection type

    Propane all the way (or a propane/butane mixture).

    Butane is unusable below about 4 degrees Celsius.
    Also it should say on the instruction book.

    Beware campingaz is butane!

    You can use either, only the regulator is different which is easily swapped out or replaced.

    As stated in an earlier post, butane doesnt operate well at low temperatures so patio heaters normally use propane so propane canisters are usually sold as 'patio gas'.

    Butane has a higher caloric value but performance drops below 10C so given this is Ireland I use propane and also means you can use your BBQ during a snow storm when your ESB is cut ;-)
