Parking

Why is it that every so often NUIG brings out a policy that single handedly manages to p*ss off everybody, staff and student alike, in one go?

So they've decided to start charging for parking permits, which you might think was in an attempt to reduce the amount of cars on campus, but I find that hard to believe considering they are also charging for the part and ride - the system initially setup to reduce the number of cars on campus.

Also, this is considered a pilot scheme which we have to pay €35 for, which lasts from now until August. Following the pilot scheme, we will then have to pay at least €50 for a space for the year (likely to be more, this is a guideline price).

My first problem with all of this is that the pilot scheme should be free.

Secondly, paying for a parking permit does not guarantee you a space - from the Parking Management System information sheet it says the parking permit entitles staff and students to 'hunt' for a space. It actually says this....

Thirdly, although rumours were circulating for the past month that the college might introduce parking fees, they promised official notification would be handed out to permit holders by the end of April. The day that official clamping of old permits was yesterday...notification only went out today.

And finally, the park and ride facility should be free, considering that parking there is also extremely limited and you are still not guaranteed a space.

Sorry for the rant - considering I'm a researcher who is no longer getting paid, but I still have to pay the college €5,800 a year in fews to 'rent' a desk in a warehouse, I think I should be allow to park for free.

Putting in extra annoying double yellow lines in Corrib Village has knocked out at least 8 car park spaces too, ones I rely on when running a bit late. I won't be paying as I'm finishing up soon but it's still annoying

I know, it wasn't emailed. They posted notices to all current permit holders, but I haven't gotten one myself. There's also a lovely red stamp on the ones who got a staff permit last year but weren't actually entitled to one.

I don't think I'll be paying it either, I'm set to finish in the coming months!

is parking free over at dunnes in westside? it's only about a 10min walk from there to the concourse. not too sure cos i don't drive but that'd make more sense than paying €50 for the park & ride :)

Is it not like €50 for the year? Or semester? Not a bad deal when you consider what it is for a parking spot in the city with a bus to your destination. Galways a wet place you know...

    FWIW, get a bike

Its closer to twenty minutes really but its a good plan, the car park is rarely full too. Pretty sure its free.

Paying for parking doesn't sound too bad but as the op pointed out you don't even get a guaranteed space so its really another motor tax. Its clearly designed as a new revenue source and in a way I don't blame them, but at the same time I'm sure there are numerous cutbacks that could be made without affecting students lives/study experiences before this tax should be brought in.

Isn't there a system in place where you can only park for 2-3 hours in Dunnes - could be wrong there, but if so I think you can be clamped after that time.

Also remember that (for staff) the government were going to charge I think 100 euro to park at work (as a true tax), IF THE EMPLOYER PROVIDES A FREE SPACE. Now that NUIG are charging for a space then staff will not have to pay the 100 euro (or that is how it was explained to me). Don't get me wrong, I am not defending the charging, I think with all the levys the staff have been hit with recently then this is just the cherry on the cake.

[RANT] Also can't stand the attitude of the two ladies manning the desk in the parking office on the concourse, its as though they personally own each and every space and you better be thankful for each scrap of advice or assisstance you manage to begrudgingly squeeze out of them [/RANT]
