What DE/WM do you use?

As the title asks, interested in seeing what DE/WM people use, and if there's a real reason to it.
There doesn't seem to be a thread on this, at least not in the last few months.

For me it's KDE, just because it's what I'm used to, originally used Gnome when I first started using Linux (Ubuntu 6.06 I think) but as soon as I started using KDE I never went back to it.
Thinking of trying something like Awesome WM just to see what it's like, seems good from what I've seen of it but with a bit of a learning curve.

The poll is probably a bit limited but I figured I could either keep it to a minimum and have people complain or include a bunch of things that would receive little or no votes.

    What DE/WM 49 votes

    Gnome
    0% 0 votes
    KDE
    57% 28 votes
    XFCE
    24% 12 votes
    Other Desktop Environment
    10% 5 votes
    Window Manager (sans full DE)
    6% 3 votes
    I'm too hardcore for X

I didn't vote because I use more than one. :)

Gnome on everything except this laptop which is xfce. Considering switching to gnome though.

Might give the new KDE a lash, but I find it less intuitive.

And of course I thought about this before making the poll and still forgot to make it multiple choice :P

Gnome. Always trying to like KDE but never succeeding.

Big fan of Enlightenment, but it's still not stable enough I think.

KDE presently, but am looking at Openbox ...... specifically this version

    http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/

....... maybe I will find I don't need all those desktop options :D

I spend most of my time in runlevel 3:p However, I am very partial to the awesome window manager. Fecking brilliant concept, and you can script it with Lua. Awesome it is.

Gnome on Debian and Xfce on Slackware are what I use.

I use KDE at the mo but I voted GNOME because I will be switching over in the next week when I install 10.04.

I really like KDE, but I'm gonna give GNOME a shot partially because KNetworkManager won't connect to my college network and partially just for the newness.

I've always been partial to window maker.

Might be time to move on tho

Gnome in most of my VMs, but xfce on the server. Might change that if I update it to 10.04 server mind, not the biggest fan of it.

I always see people saying they "just don't like KDE", but I never know why.

I'd be interested if anyone could be more specific.

People seem to think it's "bloated". Frankly I'm not knowledgable enough in this area to give any kind of informed opinion on the relative worth of DEs, but I always liked KDE.

It did notice that I ended up using programs other than the default KDE "house brand" applications in some areas. Some things are great like Akkregator or Kate but I never used Konqueror or KOffice, for example. I dunno if that is serious enough to call a bad thing though it annoyed me just a tad...

Generally it's "bloated" if they have less than 75% of their RAM free when using it.
Otherwise it's an attempt to be Windows 7, because it has the panel at the bottom of the screen and a menu to the left. Since Windows has these things it must be horrible and undesirable.

Well, I don't like it because any time I have tried using it I found it to be slow and unstable which I tend to find to be good enough reasons.

I plan on setting GNOME to look like that when I install it...

Better than looking like a trendy Mac fanboy.

I don't like Dolphin and I don't like the menu layout. I'm also not big into screenlets or plasmoids or whatever they are. I like a clean desktop with any indicators I need in the panel.

gnome for me, but i must say i'm not looking forward to gnome shell when it comes out in 3.0, i'm relatively new to 'nix, so i started with a kde about 2 years ago, didnt last long, the menus were all over the place, just didnt like the feel of it, the eye candy was great, but that was about it for me, plus i'm too used to using gnome apps now i wouldn't know or be bothered to learn any alternatives !! :D

I love the simplicity of Xfce so I use xubuntu. Such a clean desktop. It's only for development anyways so does the job fine and I in terminal most the time.

Ahh KDE. I'm not masochistic enough to ditch it just yet :pac:

I like Xubuntu alright. Xfce has the best mascot of the lot I think :P

Gnome because I'm comfortable with it.

I've been keeping eye on KDE's development over the years and it has been less than impressive to say the least.

That said I don't really like what I've seen from the next iteration of Gnome either. But at least they're doing something new and worthwhile.
