I'm talking about science courses. I know you get to retake it in the summer but what kinda problems does that cause? My brother says they dock you 40% or some mad **** like that. Also I was looking this up and noticed on the computer science course or something they said something about not being eligible for an honours degree if you fail a test first attempt. I mighta misinterpreted that anyone know if there are any problems associated with failing a test first time round?

When he was talking about 40% he probably meant that no matter what you get, even if its 100%, in any repeat exam you take your grade is considered a pass (ie. 40%).

If you fail something and have to repeat it in final year of Computer Applications then your degree is capped at a 3.1. It used to be capped at a Pass but they changed that last year (or possibly the year before?). Not that a 3.1 is really much better, but I guess you can at least say you have an honours degree.

I've no idea if that applies to other courses.

Hey, on the subject of failing exams, I'm just wondering what is the story with compensation passing. I got all my exams in January but heard of people getting just below 40% in some things like 37% or 38%. I assumed once you passed everything else that once if you got over 35% they would pass you by compensation. Just wondering is this the case for the summer exams? Also this is probably a dumb question but I'm assuming you need to pass every module for the entire year to avoid coming back in August to re-sit? Its just I heard something about credits and needing to get X amount of credits to pass the year. Am assuming getting this amount of credits means passing everything.

The examination rules apply for both Christmas and summer exams, there is no distinction between the two. You have to pass every module to progress to the next year, you repeat anything you fail in August.

    The criteria for compensation is:

    - Modules failed must be 1/6th or less of your overall credits (check your student portals academic tab to see the credits for each module). Each entire year of modules is worth 60 credits, individual modules are usually either worth 5 or 10 credits (10 credits for year long modules usually or the important ones), so that being out of 60 means you can only stand to fail 10 credits worth of modules.

    - Your grade must be over 35% (ie. 35-39%)

    - Your overall average for the year is 45%+

If you tick these boxes then that means the exam board might compensate you by bumping your 36/37/38% to a pass.

A few friends of mine had to repeat first year and as far as I can make out, if you fail an exam, you are allowed to take a repeat exam in august. The result you get there is taken. However if you are taking a module in a repeat year, the percentage you get in the exam is written on your transcript however your overall grade is capped at a 3.1 for the year.

In first and second year, this isn't too bad because your grades aren't taken into account for your overall degree until 3rd year. However when you are called for interviews for your INTRA placement, the companies you apply to will have that information supplied to them. So it is kinda important...

Again, I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'm fairly sure that is how it works...

Ah right that explains it. Thanks. So the only downside (unless your in your final year) is that no matter what you get it'll only say a "pass" on your record.

Nice one that explains everything I was wondering.
