You might have seen my other thread about trying to buy a Fiesta here. Think the dealer wants far too much money for what is a fairly low spec car. But that's another story!

Am now thinking of importing from the North/London. Been doing a bit of research both on this forum and elsewhere on the net, and it might very well work out cheaper than trying to buy here.

My question is: Has anyone done this before? How much VRT is likely to be paid on an 08 1.2 Zetec or Steel model?

I looked at this recently and couldn't get any significant savings over buying here. If you are a cash buyer (which you must be is you are looking at the UK) then you should be able to find a dealer here who will want your business.
