South America 3 week Adventure! Help needed!

Hi all. Myself and my other half are heading to South America for three weeks in October. I have a plan to visit Cusco in Peru for 8 days or so and of course take in Machu Picchu. My Question is:

Would anyone recommend the lesser travelled "Lares Trek" rather than the "Classic Inca Trail"?

Then we'll be taking the train from Cusco to Puno (Lake Titicaca). Now for the main point of me putting up this post...can anyone recommend what to do for a couple of days around Lake Titicaca or indeed where to stay?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

We went to see the "Uros" on Lake Titicaca which will no doubt be recommended to you. Some people on the tour loved it, but our group thought they were the Peruvian equivalent of plastic leprechauns. Like visiting Glendalough and being taken to see the local halting site rather than the monastic ruins. So err I wouldn't recommend it :)

Puno is the major town and is big enough, so I imagine there is plenty of accommodation.

Nearby is a town called Juliaca which houses the local airport & which is one of the most horrible places I have ever visited. Great to see, keep your doors locked however :)

We took the bus from Cusco to Puno. A proper tourist bus, air conditioned etc. That was a fabulous trip through much of "real" Peru and I loved every minute (of a long trip).

This would be better answered in the travel section.

I cant comment on the lares trek but the Inca trail was my favourite thing in over 10 months of travel.

If you can make your way up north a bit to a place called Huaraz the hiking is amazing. 4 or 5 day treks through mountain passes, glaciers, lakes, and it´s very Peruvian with a lot less tourists as well (which might be good for a change). Although, it would take you off your route a fair bit.
