I am purchasing the DDS by Numark. I am Going to have ALL my music on a Hardrive and play/mix my tunes on the DDS.

I havn't purchased an external h/d before and i'm just wondering what brand is reliable and decently priced. I'll be looking to buy less than a TB. Something Compact that I can build into my system. Approx 160gb will do me ok.

It needs to be reliable for a gig from 4 hours - 8 hours. Cannot afford over heating...etc

How about these which I just found randomly online:
Seagate Free Agent Desktop Hard Drive

LaCie 320GB Petit Hard Disk USB 2.0

    Tips and advice appreciated :p

None of them will *cough* ''overheat''.

I'd be more worried about foampadding them or something so that the bass frequencies won't interrupt the spindle during a search-routine.

If you're serious and only need a low capacity HD, I'd definitely DEFINITELY go the SSD route.

What is an example of a SSD external hard drive? Is it like a USB but with much greater capacity?

Basically it's a solid state type of drive with little to no moving parts, and is thus a lot sturdier.

Lacie all the way, but i'd get a non bus powered one, faster rpm than the bus powered and that means less chance of glitching when streaming two files at once. oh and have a back up memory stick full of mp3 just in case and keep a back up of your library at home.

Ssd's are overkill for playback purposes. If it was in a laptop maybe due to the OS but not in an all in one unit. Also the mttf is lower, cost is higher and they are managed differently.

On the other hand I wouldnt pic a small drive. They tend to be older units with slower in outs. That said a TB drive will have longer seek times.

Overall Id go for something like a 500GB Barracuda. Also I'd use any one drive for a max of 3 Years. After that the probability of a fail goes up.

Get a USB stick as an emergency backup incase your primary ever fails. 8gb would do.

Ahh, was on an iTouch earlier and didnt open the link as the connection was sh1te. I mixed up the DDS with this:

I'd never use an external as a primary source, they are far to vulnerable. Do a search on the Computers and Technolody forum if you dont believe me.

If you can safely mount it in your case then I'd go for a 3.5" 7K RPM EXTERNALLY POWERED[Forget USB powered ones] 500GB. There is a company in a southern county making(read assembling) externals, called Danelek or something like that. They are in lovely cases but I dont know what drives are in them.

This Maybe? http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/1633161/art/iomega/prestige-500-gb-usb-2-0-e.html#tech-specs No real specs listed unfortunately. The 1TB is cheaper too :p

The usb bit is just a case and an adapter. Depending on the case you can just slot in any 2.5" Hard Drive provided to can be powered from USB (Check the draw in terms of Watts and Amps. Most are ok)

But I would seriously +1 on the SSD route. They will never fail you and the speed is phenomenal compared to spindle drives.

Any examples of any solid state drives please?
    That'd be great :o
