Short answer is no, because another opportunity presented itself closer to home which I went for instead, and got! I had to make a choice comparing the two, how would I manage my time, split work and personal life, as well as travel and possible rewards - not just monitory. I decided at the last minute I wouldn't go for the trapping job, regretted it a couple of times since then but things appear to have settled now and I'm happy with my decision. Should it come up again in the future I'll reconsider. The big negative aspect of the job for me was my location, it would have entailed a large amount of driving.

Using an air rifle to kill a fox wouldn't be my preferred method, a moderated shotgun or .22lr would be a lot better.

The usual way of dispatching a mink in a cage is a pellet to the head - I'd guess that the text in the article was from a press release and badly edited, giving an incorrect impression for that reason.

Well i don't know how much mink are near me, I have seen 1 on the river beside me.

My biggest problem is magpies, often seen 7-13 of them in the one field or in the space of two fields.
We also have a large greycrow population.

I might become a larsen trapper myself as we have very little pheasants I feel as a result!

We know it's incorrect, but others might not, and there is a section of people who'll spin it in an animal cruelty way if they got a chance. It is sloppy editing, as per usual when it comes to hunting issues in the meeja.

I've only seen one Mink in my area in the last five years and i shot him whilst setting a cage!
There's still 40 to 50 caught each year in the club, so just cause you don't see them doesn't mean their not there!

if they want rid of them so bad why dont they put a bounty on their heads

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,271 ✭✭✭✭johngalway

They're removing them from certain areas. It is not a country wide iniative. Otherwise if I was trapping mink here, and getting a €10 for each, I could be collecting mink off all you lands for a €5 and be sat on my ass at home. Bounty would only work country wide.

There was a survey carried out in 1985 regarding mink populations in ireland and i think one of the conclusions was that they will never be fully eradicated due to the fact that there is always juvenile mink mobile between territories and ready to take over a territory when a particular mink is removed. Does anybody know how long they intend on carrying out the trapping for. ?

I believe it's an 8 month contract. Whether it will be done again next year I do not know.

In the Independent artical it says the cost of controlling the mink over the next 5 years is 1.6million. I hope this means they are going to keep it up full time for 5 years. I think they would have to take this kind of approach to make any headway. All vermin control is a 3-5 year project.

All vermin control done by the state is subject to funds ;) In the current climate I would take no ones word until contracts are signed.

I am surprised that none of the anti brigade have not suggested rehabilitating them as pets or some other gibberish that they come up with.

They're the ones who let a lot of them out in the first place.
