I would try a company that specializes in Cooling / Heating / Insulation, i'm pretty sure they will be able to tell you where you can get one anyway. We actually have one but not sure if we rent it out.

I know that engineers who snag houses for builders all have one. I'm sure that any of them would defo rent it to you for a few days. If ya check yellow pages you get some engineers that can help ya.

pat kyne leak detection (based in tuam) has one and charge about 80-100squid for a visit. It cost him over 10k so don't think he'll let you have it.. I saw it in action trying to find a leak in central heating and it was able to pick up central heating pipes in concrete floor with timber flooring already laid on top of it - i think it is sensitive to changes in temp of about .01Celsius. PM me if you want his no.

In answer to churchview's question, I use it to take a thermal image of the external walls of a house from the outside for example and it will show up hot spots which indicates that the dwelling is losing heat through the external walls at that location, which might be due to a badly insulated cavity for example.

If you were getting your cavity wall filled it would be a good way of telling if the job is done correctly or not by taking a before an after image, you can then tell the contractor where the cavity needs more fill from the Thermal Image

    Thanks Aljoke,

I've an oldish house which had it's cavity filled with a pumped insulation in the 70s. You've explained to me how to check if there are spots that need renewing.

    Much appreciated.

If you learn how to talk to snakes you could just get one of them to have a look at it for you.

Depending on how regulated your industry is, you can make infra-red cameras extremely easily using a cheap web cam and an IR filter. IF you are simply using it as a tool to look for heat leaks (relative to the rest of the building or whatever) then this could be all you need. It would cost about €30 to make one.
