I find the front usb a bit messy............

My Alpine IDA-X001 has a rear USB connection, and an extension cable for the USB port. You can plug a memory stick/hard drive in and use that, or plug in an iPod and completely recreate the iPod GUI on screen.

What will you be looking to play music from if you have the USB? I get a Sony MEX-BT2500, it has Bluetooth and I can play music from my iPhone throgh it wirelessly, it's bloody brill

    Cheers for that.

There is a bew 800 model out and i'm going to try and get that.

How easy was set up with the iphone. That would be a perfect solution for me

Dead easy, a friend of mine gave me the head unit for the costly price of an eddie rockets! I looked up on the net how to sync the blooteeth, all I had to do was switch off the radio, hold a Bluetooth button and turn the Bluetooth on my phone on, enter 0000 and that was it!

It's a lovely head unit too, I was gonna buy the Mex-3800 or 2800 but I was offered the used 2500 for virtually free so I happily took it! There's an option on it for cd,tuner etc but one of the options is BT Audio and it'll say xplod at the bottom of your iPhone when you play a song, it'll automatically play tru the radio once bt audio is selected. I only got mine yesterday so it's all dead new and cool to me!!!

I think the only difference between the 500 and 800 is the USB input, I didn't know I could play the music wirelessly so I was going to buy an aux lead but I didn't need it in the end!

That was back in the day when no other options were available. I'm sure with the advances in the last few years there's an ingtegrated jobbie that would be a lot less hassle ;)

    Basic setup was:
    230v invertor,
external media drive with video and audio out with remote control
Huge Lexus battery so no voltage drop when starting (standard FTO battery was same as boxy Nissan Micra....)
DVD headunit with audio and video in sockets

Hard drive was run through the AV-in on the headunit, and tracks, playlists selected using remote.

Jesus I didn't realize how much work you put into that colm, i reckon there's far easier ways to do it nowadays!

Colm, what route would you take I'm your next FTO?

You mean what would I do for music, or what mods would I do?

    For the music

Well in the last FTO I went for the much simpler idea of an ipod integated headunit with the ipod in the glovebox. I never used the old system in the first FTO for watching TV or DVDs, the car was very showy and the over complicated setup suited that car ;)
