Why are some races 1/5 the odds and other 1/4?

As the headline reads, why is this for e/w purposes? What determines if a race is 1/4 - 123 or 1/5 123?

1/4 odds all handicaps except for handicaps between 8 and 11 runners. These are a 1/5.

All other races are a fifth I think.

hard one to answer these days given some bookies are more generous than others but most bookies offer a quarter the odds on all handicaps
and 1/5 on all non handicaps though i have seen bookies go 1/4 on
    non handicaps also.
16 runners or more in a handicap is 1/4 1-4
    8-15 runners 1/4 123
    5-7 runners 1/4 1-2

non handicaps is usually 1/5 123 if over 7 runners but you
dont get four places in a non handicap even if theres 25 runners

this use to be the case years ago but the likes of pp and some other
will give 1/4 on some non handicaps also

Sometimes this makes for a completely stupid betting proposition. There was a 27 runnner maiden in ireland there the other day. 3 places and dunno the ew odds.

1/4 odds on all handicap races.

    16+ runners = 1,2,3,4 places.

    8+ runners = 1,2,3 places.

    7- runners = 1,2 places.

All non-handicaps ie: Maidens, Group Races, Classified Stakes, Listed Races (Usually Stakes (although can also be handicap form)).

    1/5 odds

    7- runners = 1,2 places

    8+ runners = 1,2,3 places

These are the rules. It's at the bookmakers discretion as to what they offer though.
