I got a train fine by inspector approximately 4 or five weeks ago but have not received a letter as yet? Just wondering how long it took for anyone else to get the letter? Kinda hoping I've gotten away with it!

I thought they write it up and hand it to ya there and then?

yeah he gave me a little blue slip but also said that I'd get a letter. I assumed I'd wait for the letter before paying. Anyone else that I've talked to got a letter about paying it.

I'd just pay it, the letter may have gotten lost, and the next letter will probably be a summons ;)

Every now and again I forget my monthly ticket and get fined, last time took about 6-8 weeks for the letter to arrive but they will definitely send one to you [presuming you gave them the correct address!].

ha yeah I was stupid enough to give them my real address. I think I'll just wait and see if I get the letter.. not paying if I don't.

Would it not be cheaper to either go back and get it or buy a single/day return on the days you forget your monthly ticket?

Oftentimes, I don't have to validate my ticket in the morning so it's not until you get to leave the destination you realise you have forgotten the wallet with the ticket in it. The only way out is by running through the turnstyle when some else validates their ticket or speak to the inspector.

I would scan my monthly ticket and email it to RPU department and they have no problem waiving the fine. They have an office in the car park at Connolly where you can show your ticket/pay your fine also.

I know this is digging up an old thread so feel free to move it but I was just wondering if IR fine letters still take so long to turn up.

I got a fine 19th May (day after my birthday! :() and was told that I would get a letter so decided to wait for that til I paid the fine. I'm still waiting!

    Does this sound about right?

just bear in mind that an post could have lost it. IE may have sent it but if you did not receive it then it's your problem and not their unfortunately.

If you got a docket on the day that is all you are going to get, thats legally all you have to get.

Pay within the number of days indicated and it goes away. Failure to pay means a summons is sent by registered post normally.

But I was told that I would get a letter and that I had to pay from then?
Also I was waiting on it so I could find out how I could pay. The docket says nothing!

I'm clearly past the 21 days now so what can I do? If I did send in money now with an explanation would they accept it? Or if I sent it in when I got a summons because I won't even be able to attend court

Call the RPU office ASAP at 01 703 2750 and ask them how you can pay for same. You were issued with the ticket so that alone is notice of you knowing you had to pay Irish Rail, letter or no letter.
Or if I sent it in when I got a summons because I won't even be able to attend court

I don't know quite how you reckon you won't be able to attend court but this is 100% not an option as you will get into a lot of trouble for not answering a court summons, not mention being fined in your absence.

Sorted it. He gave me a few more week to pay. I shouldn't have been told that I was getting a letter

I didn't mean that in an "I'm above the law" sense, more in a "there is no way that I would be able to get the time off to go" sense.
I'm a law student. I do know how the courts work

In the real world you cannot hide your responsibilities and obligations, you get the time off or else you pay dearly

Failure to present yourself in court will result in automatic judgement against you. 1000 euro fine, 35 days in jail in default

    85% conviction rate currently

I'm sorry but when did I ever say that I was going to skip any court date? It was only a simple comment. I said that I wouldn't really be able to. Obviously I'd find a way though.

Don't give me your condescending "real world" crap. I'm in the real world. I know it well.

    Get over yourself.

You implied it by stating you wouldn't be able to attend, what you mean and what you write can be very different things, so it's best to write what you mean.

I made a simple comment. I never ever said or implied that I would miss a date. Just that I couldn't attend one without difficulties. And the rudeness was still not necessary either way.

I didn't expect someone to get all self rightous over a comment written in a hurry.

How stupid do you think I am that I would willingly miss a court date?

    EDIT:
Furthermore, I never asked any advice about Court dates.
I asked a simple question bout whether I should be expecting a letter and what to do if I don't get said letter.

Both queries were sorted. None of this was necessary

Read the three of these again and see if they make sense together?

How are people supposed to interpret the part in bold up above?

Because most people have the cop on to know that a person wouldn't willingly skip a court date and just meant in a general sense.
especially when you look at the next comment
