    Hi
I have a 1999 golf Tdi which makes a very annoying vibration when its slowing down. It only happens (or i only notice it) when going very slowly ie when approaching lights or stop sign. Its like a vibration or shuddering coming from engine. When car has stopped completely the vibration stops. Can anyone advise on what this could be? Thanks for any ideas in advance

Does it only happen when you're using the brakes?

thanks for reply - no dosent just happen when braking. It happens even when i take it out of gear and it is rolling up to lights or just going very slowly its like engine is racing up and down or engine is vibrating. When car has completely stopped noise stops and engine sounds perfect. Hard to describe really. Any ideas?

Sometimes the Anti Shudder Valve can get stuck. If you open the bonnet and look at the circular silver thing on the top left side of the engine you should see some sort of connection to a plunger.

Dont mess with it but slowly push or pull it to see if its sticky.

For other members, I think it could be a clogged EGR valve causing a sticky antishudder valve?

Thanks a million for advice. Should i be able to pull this plunger In and Out freely?

Yes, I remember I played with it last month and it was quite easy to move but I wouldnt over do it. You see, in that silver thingy there is usually a deposit of gunk. Dont worry, its ok for there to be some gunk. Just sometimes there can be more then usual and it can cause the valve to stick. If there is a large deposit fiddling with the valve a lot can dislodge the gunk and make it go into the engine, though that could just be for the USA where their diesel was so bad the valve was clogged to an unbelievable degree.

Just do it once to see if that can un-stick the valve but if it doesnt dont go it again and if it does seem free go for a drive and see.

If you are in any way good with your hands try and take the black pipe to the left of the silver dome off and look into the dome and see how dirty it is.

Mine wasnt as bad as the above pic but id say thats almost normal, though on the verge of bad.

    Now thats a horrible one.

If testing the valve works and you dont get the shuddering try this. The next time the engine is warm and you are out for a drive, drive it hard. Stay in 4th for a longer time time then normal before shifting to 5th and with any luck you can burn off any excess gunk.

Its good to drive the engine hard every once and a while. I always do it and my EGR was much better then the first pic.
