    Hi,

I am thinking of buying my first smartphone...and was wondering which is best?
To be honest, I don't know what the differences are between them all.
I basically want one that is reliable, easy to use, easy to use the internet on it using wifi, good applications etc.
I am a pay-as-you-go customer, and dont mind switching networks, but dont want to go pre-pay.

    Thanks!

I wouldn't bother with Touch Pro 2. Microsoft are releasing a new mobile operating system shortly (Windows Mobile 7, vs. the Windows Mobile 6.1 on the Touch Pro 2), so if you want an MS machine I'd wait for that.

The Hero and Desire both run Android. Desire is the newer device and about twice as powerful as the Hero.

I have the Desire and love it, it has everything you say you're looking for.

The other smart-phone option is obviously iPhone. Doesn't have the raw power or some of the nicer features of Desire/Android but certainly has a much wider collection of top-quality apps. If you don't mind essentially being locked into using Apple for all your future media needs.

    Thanks for your reply :)

I want to avoid Apple at all costs, so the iPhone is a no-no.

I think Desire is the best option so, although a pricey option!
I could be mistaken, but vodafone seem to be the only one offering it on pay-as-you-go.
I just need to find out if they do a good data package for ready-to-go's now too.

This might be a silly question...but i'll be using the phone mostly with wifi...so would I still need a big data package?

It'd probably be best, yeah. Maybe not a "big" one (we're not talking about streaming HD movies here... just your basic web data) but these phones are definitely designed with constant data connection in mind. Calendar, mail, contacts, 'friend streams', etc. are all kept up to date by syncing with an online source. Though you can tell the phone not to use the cellular data network (i.e. wifi only) by default, and just enable it when you have the need. Any information that's already been sycned to the phone can be accessed offline, and new data will wait on your phone for a connection before syncing the other way.

I'm not too familiar with Vodafone but from what I've been told, O2 pay-as-you-go data package costs €1 a day. You get charged the euro when you first start accessing data and that will cover you for the next 24 hours.

Vodafone sell the Desire for €429 but if you port over you get it for €409. Vodafone's Pay as You Go costs 99c a day per 50mb.

The Desire comes with widgets that let you turn Wifi, 3G, blue tooth etc on and off on the fly with just a tap which goes along way to saving your battery :)

Moving to a HTC Desire from a Nokia 5800 (which is not a crap phone) is an eye opening experience and after just 3 days Im shocked at how slow I now find the 5800 . The only downside to the Desire is the name imho :)

Vodafone do data add-ons now for pay as you go customers.
    500MB for €2 - Lasts a day
    2GB for €10 - Lasts a week
    5GB for €20 - Lasts a month.
Pretty handy. Not sure how much data browsing ect uses up but I'd imagine the 5GB would last fairly well over a month if your using wifi at home.

And +1 for the desire. Got one on saturday, very easy to use, great apps and browsing is very user friendly. Really vibrant screen on it too.

I've a desire but I have to say that the legend is a really nice alternative. Nicer than the hero anyway
