UPS Delivery - "Additional Charges" - Rip Off

So I ordered a pair of runners made from recycled material and organic hemp. Today they arrived with UPS and they demanded 13.50 in "additional charges" aswell as 18.50 in VAT

Ok, paying VAT is one thing, I would have got away with it if the store had allowed me to choose regular post, but in the end I don't mind.

Additional charges however is totally insulting. I have already payed $49 to the retailer for shipping, why should I have to pay an additional E13.50 to UPS to receive my shoes? This is a total rip-off. UPS obviously just do it because they can get away with it. What am I going to do, let them send the items back?

Anyway I didnt have any money on me, so they are going to redeliver tomorrow. Hopefully there wont be any additional charges resulting from that.

As I said, the retailer did not allow me to choose my shipping method. I would not have chosen UPS if I had the option.

You are paying UPS for a service of declaring your goods; if you wish to avoid it in the future then you can send in the relevant documentation, pay the VAT etc. and forward that to the carrier to avoid it.

You can also thank the government who allowed them to charge this fee by law.

Have you asked what the "additional charges" are for ?

Send in my relevant documentation to revenue? But I only ordered the shoes on Saturday..

The additional charges are the UPS local processing fee. Covers cusoms declaration & customs processing.

An Post charges €5, private import firms charge up to €65.

The fee is fixed no matter whether the item you bring in is worth €10 or €10,000.

The fee applies to all goods coming from outside the EU.

    Hello Deansmedley,

I would be interested to know why you would expect a carrier to provide a customs entry on your behalf, pay money to customs on your behalf and not charge a nominal fee for the service ? You have the option of issuing an instruction to UPS not to clear the goods on your behalf, just to notify you on arrival, so you can produce the entry to customs yourself and settle the money due for Duty and/or VAT directly with customs.

DHL will levy a 2% advance fee over the outlay in VAT / Duty plus an administration fee. I am not 100% sure about Fedex and TNT, but even An Post will charge for collecting the duty / VAT.

Where I come from we say : "Only the sun goes up for nothing". As I said, you can opt out by doing the customs process yourself.

    regards,
    Rudolf289

Hey, not to be a pain in the ass or anything but how to I pay the vat and everything myself? i think UPS provide a good, fast service but last time i ordered with them i got charged almost 50% on top of what i had paid!

Im just wondering where i can select to use a different delivery company? Is UPS the default delivery company for paypal or something?
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated:D

I never use UPS for non-EU online purchases. Way too expensive. Fedex seem much cheaper and USPS works fine for ordinary US purchases.

Having said that, UPS are excellent for EU purchases. Fast and resonable charges. From the US, they are a rip off.

Depends on the rates the sender has negotiated.

From China on small shipments under 100kg, I find UPS via my supplier's rates to be extremely competitive. Same from USA.

On shipments over 100kg, UPS Supply Chain Solutions (seperate division) can be unbeatable sometimes.

As with everything its swings & roundabouts. - Personally i would never use fedex as my history with them shows lost invoices, missing boxes & delayed deliveries, whereas I'm sure others would swear by them.

I always insist on USPS for shipping anything from the USA.
    Never billed by USPS.
    Always billed by UPS/Fedex/DHL.

UPS/Fedex/DHL usually have useless drivers and packages arrive battered to bits.

Don't drag up old threads in order to make an unrelated point. There's a sticky thread for all Import questions. Paypal don't sell anything, so they can't have a delivery agent.
