Panorama's that are too large

I created a Panorama from 20+ shots I took in Galway the other day, merged in CS3 and saved as TIF file, it won't let me save as Jpeg because it is too large. The file is just under 1GB, I couldn't believe it myself but I should have resized all the photos before merging.

I can only view the file on photoshop now and I'm wondering how do I get loading this to Flickr if nothing else will let me view, eg I'm in work now and no program will let me view it.

Any suggestions?? (even resizing reccommendations for such a long/large photo that won't lose a huge amount of detail)

photoshop won't let you save it or other programs?

    did you try irfanview?

I can save it, but not as a jpeg. I can save as a Large Document file, Raw or TIF.

Never heard of Irfanview. What would it do for me in this instance?

To sum up what I did, I extracted all the RAW files to jpeg, added them all as layers to the one file (in order from top to bottom) and auto aligned and auto blended in PS. I didn't save the individual jpeg files because the laptop I was on was running low on disk space at the time.
So if I can't solve this with the file I have then I will probably give up and not waste any more time reconverting the individual RAW files to JPEG.

Why not goto Image -> Image Size - and under Document Size, select the drop down option and select percent. Change this to around 80% so your making the image 20% smaller, this should then allow you to Save As... and select jpeg.
Just tried it there on a 700mb Tiff panorama I had and it did the job.

What dpi is your image? For screen-only viewing, step down to 72dpi.

    Or maybe you're already there?

irfanview would open the tif and would likely be able to save it as a jpeg. It's a handy, lightweight program.

Have you converted the Tiff to 8bit before you try saving as jpeg?

As I say, I'm in work at the moment so will have to try when I'm home. Was hoping to get a few suggestions to try out, so I'll let ye know afterwards if it works.

    Thanks all.

as an aside - I usually open up and save jpgs in irfanview for web use simply because the compression is much better than photoshop.

For example my signature, when saved in anywhere near good quality in PS is too large for the kb restrictions on signatures. To get it down to the required kb would take the quality down to 2 or 3, I think, which is just ridiculous. Simply opening up the HQ jpeg in irfanview and resaving it keeps the quality high and brings the kb down well below the limit on sigs.

Did you actually get a message in Photoshop when you tried to save, stating the file was too large or do you presume its too big?

No, it just gave a drop down of 3 options which I listed before.

Nearly home time so I'll check it out.

Sorted - never did a Panorama this big before (both in amount of pics vs file sizes). It's nothing special as a capture, I was stuck with my 50mm on a gloomy day and thought I'd try a very wide shot out.

You absolutely should NOT have resized it before saving. If you ever want an enormous, humongous, tremendous, gargantuan print of it.. you can do so if you have it at it's highest possible resolution. :)

As for saving it... I've never heard of the "save as" function in Photoshop saying a photo was too big... I have however heard of the exporter, and the "save for web" functions doing this. (They use very different methods for saving.) You could try using a .PSD or .PSB file to save the edited version with all it's layers intact... and use that as your "digital negative" from now on.. then just resize to the size you want to print at... THEN save it as a JPG. You could also try saving as a PNG.

    I wish you luck. :)

It was 8 bit and as soon as I reduced the image size by 80% in width it would let me save as Jpeg, but I had a bit more reducing to do to get it within a size to submit to flickr.

The jpeg and lower res versions are seperate, I still have the large file regardless of whether I reckon it'd be needed for gargantuan proportions. I try keep the original copies of everything.

I never said the 'save as' function said the file was too big.

    Cheers for the input.

No such thing as "too large of a panorama". :) I usually use Imagemagick (command-line only) to bring mine down to a reasonable size.

There is, if you have no disk space left. I usually use CS3, Automate>Photomerge (reposition option). Then 'Flatten' the image. Then if I'm resizing for the web, just simply use the Resize option, change DPI to 72 or 96, and change resolution to 800pixels on longest side (or whatever), and finally SaveAs .jpg (if set to 8bit).
