Fantastic news, Meteor have announced on their customer forum that they will have micro sims available in time for the iPad launch in July and will announce data plans for it closer to the date.

    Original question asked:
    (sketch @ May 10 2010, 08:44 AM)
Will Meteor be offering micro sims for use on devices like the iPad which launches in July.
iPads come unlocked so people can choose which network they want to have their broadband with and simply pop that sim in.
Have Meteor considered offering these type sim cards and if so when should we see them? I'd imagine a lot of broadband sales could be gotten here.
    Reply from Meteor forum staff:
    Hi sketch
We are planning to introduce a micro sim in time for the launch of the iPad in Ireland.
Tariffs and pricing will be released at a later date. Will keep you posted.

    Thanks

Thought one of the things from the prototype iPhone found was that it took micro sim?

Doesn't mean they'll get iPhone but I hope they do. Micro sim will be an accepted standard once the new iPhone is released and other companies follow suit, much like when apple starting using touch screens then everyone started to use them.

My question is why would you want an iPhone with the countries most underdeveloped 3g network?

Just doesn't sound right to me.

Probably not so here's hoping the tariff's will be extremely competitive to make up for that!

Micro SIM's can be made DIY by just cutting off the plastic around a normal SIM, or so I've heard. The chip in them and the way they're read is the exact same.

because they have the best 3g quality for my area out of all the networks.

Plus at 15euro for 10gig data on my iPhone and a one month rolling contract it's the perfect companion for my iPhone 3G S.

Bur surely the reason for putting a 3g antenna in an iPad is to use 3g services. If you only has 50% population coverage. Why bother if when you are travelling around and using the iPads capability if it is just going to be on edge most of the time.

Surely 3 would be the perfect network for it.

3? Nah, outside of 3G coverage you'll have nothing. O2 is probably the best as they at least have EDGE fallback when 3G is unavailable.

Doesn't 3 fall back to Vodafone?

Vodafone don't have Edge, just GPRS.

Using Meteor broadband sim in a MiFi router on EDGE and it works the finest. Not great for YouTube but only takes about 5 to 8 secs for a boards.ie page.

Yes, for calls and texts. Not sure about data, the midband certainly doesn't work.

Why wouldn't you just get a Wifi version plus a router like the 3 Mifi so internet is available to lots of devices rather than one.

Or are we going to be suckers and get sim cards that can ONLY be used in one device aka the micro sims

Plus you don't have to go with 3 if you want to get the Mifi unlocked.

It's $130 extra to get the sim version which would more than buy a MIFI and IMHO a far better proposition

Meteor will catch up with the rest quite quickly, they have no choice. If they don't they will lose market share. They are also best placed to offer the best service in the near future for a few reasons:
    - They are last to market & have learned a lot from the mistakes of others
    - The path has been cleared for them to build sites where needed, i.e. the others may have towers to facilitate a quick rollout
    - They are owned by Eircom who have an extensive fibre network which is probably the envy of the other operators from a backhaul point of view
    - They have access to the latest version of base stations while the others may be on lesser specced equipment as they deployed earlier

From a customer point of view:
    - They have a relatively empty network compared to the competitors & therefore once they have something on the ground then it is likely that the customer will get a better service because there is less sharing of resources
