02 Broadband overcharge

I'm sure this is a topic that has been raised before. O2 have overcharged me for apparently going over my date allowance. I know for a fact that I have been each month at least 1.5 to 2gb if not much more below the allowed 10gb. I went in store today and was told to ring customer care and that I should not go by the date counter that comes with the modem.

Firstly I know of the problems attached with the modem and that the date it says has been used is incorrect, then why is it that they bother having it then? I was told that I should not go by that, why shouldn't I? Its there to ensure I can track my usage is it not?
That said am I right in saying that the problem was that the data counter with the 02 modem was over-counting and not under counting the data?

Secondly when I ring them to sort this all out, has anyone advice on how best to approach them? I was going to and decided against installing a programme to monitor the date, i regret that now. I don't have a virus, I rarely download anything and if i do its of a small size and I usually only go on the tinternet in the evenings and not at weekends because I use the Wifi at home. So theres no way I have been going over the allowance. What should I say to them?

The software counter is there as a guide only, and O2 probably can't remove it as it comes from the vendor. Anyway, the correct way to monitor usage is through your online account. Your monthly allowance runs on O2's billing period, not calendar month or from the date you bought the modem.

If you are approaching 8 or 9GB usage between the dates you are monitoring, then it's very likely you have gone over the 10GB based on the monitored period.

Check your online account for actual usage. There's not a lot you can do about the charge except ask O2 to waive it.

I definitely haven't been going over the allowance. The modem just doesn't get used enough to go anywhere near 10gb never mind going over it. I thought the problem with the data counter on the 02 modem was that it was consistently going well above the actual usage?

Anyway I'll ring them up and explain. Its ridiculous that the modem comes with a redundant date counter.

the online counter is pretty accurate the modems software counter does be all over the place same with 3's modem software aswell also if you went close to your download limit say 1GB before going over they will send you a message i got the same message 3times from them saying my download balance was low there must be a mistake somewhere!!
