No point in discussing it further you have it pretty nailed on there with your selections. Smyths and Trinners, different class.

I think Trinity is in a league of its own... Smyths though, you'd get sick of the buckets and the pitchers for €15 and a tenner reespectively

You don't have to drink them though.

Both places are dreadful imo unless a 17 year old getting their photo printed in the Limerick Post's Out & About section is considered cool.

Can't argue with that. Tom Collins and the White House pubs also deserve a mention. Different scene, no bebo-generation young ones spilling their drinks on you, in a word....Nice:)

Best pub: Clohessys (although it has it's fair share of shapers it's still my favourite haunt)
Best club: Costellos. I feel too old in Trinity and Angel Lane!
Overall Champion 2010: Ardhu Bar (nice atmosphere, seating, good smoking area, reasonably priced booze and they pull a good pint. Bonus: taxis right outside the door)

I think this thread cant be truely answered unless we break it up into 18-24, 25-29 etc etc, because eventhough i really like trinity rooms, i wouldnt really go there as its age group is too young.

    I would second the ardhu bar, some really good nights spent there, 80s nights every sat night! too far out tho, i think if i had to say my choice would be;

    best pub: smyths
    best club: angel lane
overall champion 2010: toss up between angel lane and icon on sat nights

What are the criteria for best pub? I mean Smyths and Clohessys serve some of the worst pints known to mankind. How does this make them good?

Cuz they play like the bestest music in the world and all the cool people go there , fake tan and munster rubgy jersey optional though.

On the other side of the coin I saw Costello's mentioned above, now let's face it the place is an absolute dump, but it serves the patron's needs.

PUB: Still House. Good pints, good crowd (wont look at you funny if your a bit unstable) football on the box, live music the odd time and jukebox (toilets are an issue i'll admit)

CLUB: Costellos/Trinners. Both have their uses depending on the need. :)

LOL! Thank God they have three areas and that shower can be avoided. Didn't know that about the pints but I agree, the quality should be taken into consideration.

In my 11 years of hitting the tiles of Limerick I've never once managed to feature in the Out and About section. Just gotta keep the faith I suppose!

Best* Pub: The Corner Flag (€5 lunch specials what more can I say!)
Best* Nightclub: Toss up between D'Icon of Denmark Street or Costelloe's Tavern. As someone already said, both serve their purposes.

    * By "best" I obviously mean just a pub/club I happen to like; not necessarily even my favourite one.

Ha ha - are you deluded?

Costello's is probably the worst club in the city if not the country, I have been in better clubs in Nenagh!!!

Its like something from the 70's and not the good kind. Its smelly, the decor is a disgrace, the facilities (i wouldnt keep pigs in) in fact the only good thing going for it is the music

I think that's what make it so good...
It is what it is just like the majority of people who frequent the place...a no bulls*it sort of place.
Went there for years (not been in a while now) and had some of my best nights in Limerick there.

Yeah the decor could do with a bit of updating but plush surroundings is low on my list of priorities for nightclubs.
These are just a few reasons I really like Costello's:
    • The music is excellent
    • The people are nice and friendly
    • No arrogant bouncers talking sh1t
    • No scumbags trying to pick fights inside or outside the club
    • €5 to get in the door

Anyhow each to there own I say.

I'd live in Costello's if they'd only allow me. :(

I don't go to a club to take note of the wallpaper or the goddamn furniture, I go to a club to have a good time with good people and good music.

Which is why I can't stand Trinity Rooms, Icon and Angel Lane.

It is just a parade of oompa loompa faced wannabe wags who think they are living a real life Sex and the City episode. It is hilarious for about ten minutes and then I just want to claw my eyes out.

Where else can you buy a packet of bacon fries and a purple Snack biscuit at 2.30 in the morning? No other club in the city that I know of. It's for that reason, and the other unpretentious reasons listed by RonMexico, millie and h3000 among others, that make it such a great place.
