    Hi Folks....

Our head is wrecked... We were out the weekend looking for a car and tbh we are very confused. Our budget was 5k and quickly went to 7k.

What we want is a diesel car if we could. The other half will be doing between 15 and 20k miles a year. What i am looking for is opinions.

what milage does it become economical to buy a diesel and what would the road tax be....

For example are we much better buying a fiat panda with its 104 road tax a year then say a 1.8 04 with 500 tax a year... Over 5 years the 1.8 will be costing us 2k more.. Granted we may save 1500 a year in juice money alone on the diesel...

Not to sure if I am making sense.... What do you reckon and if you were us what car would you be looking at...

Thank you for this monumental task...

How will you save 30 euro/week in a 1.8 diesel over a Panda, a Panda will use little unleaded really, I wouldn't fancy 400 miles a week in a Panda to be honest. Or are you on about a diesel Panda ?

    I'm lost :)

Over 50mpg is realistic on a run in a diesel, I can't see a Panda being anywhere as bad as 25mpg, I've had automatic 2.2 Prelude, Celica SS2 and currently a 520i estate BMW that all returned over 30mpg on a run no bother.

You might save a tenner a week on diesel over what the Panda would use in petrol when the road tax is also factored in, however any trouble with the diesel could cost a fair few quid, 6 year old common rail diesels with a good lash of miles on them can be expensive to maintain should things go wrong.

As always for cheap and cheerful motoring I would recommend a 406GHi or a Rover 75. I would also consider a 307HDi as they are becoming quite attractive as their prices drop.

You'd get a 406 or 75 in very good conditon for less than €3000 but they'd be 00 or 01s.
