    Hi
I am currently a fifth year student and am trying to figure out what to do when i leave school. I have a dream to be an entrepreneur but at the same time i want to do medicine. two very different fields.

I was wondering if any body had any advice about business as a career?

    Thanks

Medicine is a great career, life is in your hands and its high pressure but very rewarding. Expect for the first 30 years to be told what to do and when to do it.

An entrepreneur on the other hand lets you take control of your destiny. To dream and make those dreams happen. Your entirely in control.

Both actually have lots of similarities - long hours, lots of responsibility and unless you strive to be the best in your field you'll never be happy.

My advice is to talk to a lot of people about the lifestyles associated with both and see how they fit in with what will make you happiest.

You havent said why do you want to do medicine or why you want to be an entrepreneur?

What drives you to succeed in either area?

As Ronan said both have similarities but with medicine if you get a job you will have a full time career with decent money when you get a few years under your belt. Being an entrepreneur brings you the chance to be in control but it means a lot of hard work, no gaurantees of work or income, no sick pay or holiday pay and very long hours. However its the drive in you that makes you want to succeed and achieve the goals you set out that makes all that worth while.

I'm assuming the OP isn't interested in any of that 9 to 5 stuff that unusual people do. :D

If you can get into college to do medicine, I'd say do it. Do whatever medical graduates get at the end of college, and then look toward a business career. Many medical reps, company directors etc. started their career as doctors and nurses. In fact the MD of a major pharmaceutical company here in Ireland a few years ago started as a teacher, and was surrounded by doctors and nurses in director positions.

A friend of mine in America (and I know the system is different) was employed as an A&E (Emergency room) doctor in his local hospital while running his own practice. Apart from offering GP services at his practice he offered physiotherapist, plastic surgery, diet and nutrition and a string of other medical services.

Consider that almost all GPs are entrepreneurs; and pharmacists are entrepreneurs, there are no shortage of options for medical professionals to make it in the business world.

    Hi Patriciamc93

As previous posters have commented many Doctors have become entrepreneurs and so on. My thoughts on this would be do medicine in college do you practical stint in a hospital as it should give you a good grounding for being an entrepreneur long hours, low money (to start) and good honest hard graft.

And who knows from your time in medicine you might see a gap/niche in that field that the entrepreneur in you could work on and make your millions.

best of luck whatever you decide

The economic situation has changed. People who take risks will be rewarded. It's more fun being an entrepreneur. You have a better lifestyle and more control over your destiny. You become a better person as well, because you generally will have a more philosophical take on life.

Ultimately do what you want to do.

Business is a very broad area to be thinking about and is entirely different from medecine.

At the end of medecine you know you are going to be a doctor - end of.
With Business depending on what you major in and where that leads you you never know what opportunities you'll be able to take advantage of or what line of business you'll end up in.

I studied Business Studies & French in UL (different name for Commerce) but anyway I did find a lot of the course very tedious however on the other hand some modules were so interesting they made up for the dull ones.

I think it really boils down to do you want to be a Doctor for the rest of your life or do you want the thrill of not knowing what's around the corner in Business (bear in mind that business is hard work too - entrepreneurs work long hours)

I hope this helped at least a little :)
