Lying Car Dealer

    Hi guys.
I bought a car last september in a dealers in tullamore. The deal was that the tyres, timing belt and full service would be done before i took the car.

The service light came on a couple of weeks ago so I took it to my mechanic today to get a full service done. He told me the sump was damaged and he couldnt change the oil (the sump plug had been over tightened and rung) because he wouldnt have been able to replace the plug. He also said the filters were manky and there is no way they were changed last september.

Anyhow, I phoned the dealer and told him the story ie that they must have damaged the sump when they serviced the car. He looked up his computer and said there was no record of the oil being changed. so it wasnt them that damaged it.

So they either damaged the car and wont fix it or they sold me the car and told me it was serviced when it wasnt (they also reset the service timer)

    any ideas????

Was any details of this service/timing belt/tyres agreement on your receipt for the car?

Common enough unfortunately OP, they know people will be excited about getting their new baby etc. I picked a fella up on it one day when a buddy was picking up a new car, he had some neck - stood there rubbing pure black muck between his fingers making out that's how it should look. Still bought the car (it had a timing chain thank God, I wouldn't have believed anything he said about a belt change) but we made sure to pass on the story of what this guys word was worth as often as possible...

I wouldn't stress too much over the sump - You can always suck out the oil through the dipstick (some cars eg Smart cars have this as the only option).

What I would be worried about is the timing belt - get your mechanic to have a look at this and check the whole car over. If they didn't do the oil then they hardly did the timing belt - would be worth chasing him for money for that job...

im turning the house upside down now for the invoice. im pretty sure it stated service was done. the stamped the service book but didnt tick the little boxes .

the cars last service before i bought it had been 11000 km previous. so if they hadnt serviced it like they say the did, it means the car hasnt been serviced for nearly 30000km!

    its bad form from them.....

Its a used car, bought over 6 months ago. You wont have any comeback with the dealer.
He can say he sucked out the oil & forgot to record the service on his system.
I wouldnt worry. Get the oil sucked out in future & get the timing belt changed if its looks in the least bit dodgy

Why doesn't he have any comeback, is there a time period after which your contract with the dealer becomes void? If the dealer lied about the timing belt and the OP has written proof that it was supposed to be done then surely the dealer has to fullfill his contract? It's an expensive job and not someone you can readily undertake yourself without some experience or tools at least. What if any are the means of pursuing the dealer to get the job done as he was supposed to?

I've a similar thread below where a recently purchased car was supposed to have the timing belt and service done and neither of which were despite numerous claims they were. Will be phoning the dealer again tomorrow on the matter.

He could chase the dealer re the timing belt if he proved it wasnt done as promised. The oil service is a non issue at this stage as is the damaged sump plug. THe OP only really raised the issue of the oil change/damaged sump though so my response was based on that side of it.

Timing belt can be reasonable on some cars so it may not be the end of the world. Total crap from the dealer though no doubt.

the dealer left a voicemail on my phone today "confirming" that they had not done an oil service. a service was part of the deal. so basically they told me they serviced the car when they hadnt.

    scum bags.......

    What about the timing belt?
Not to say that a changed belt means no trouble - mine is on it's second belt in 30k miles because the first garage either took a shortcut or tensioned it up wrong..

..they are car dealers... they making living selling cars. This one simply confirms they are not far off being crooks.

They are not car enthusiasts, technical experts or customer care specialists sadly. Very sadly.
