Interviews & New job

I started a new job today, a 2-4 week contract, with possibility of extension (a week or two at most).

I got a phone call today from another company looking to interview me this wednesday. It's a permenant role, but I think it's about 30 hours a week. Which is grand. I asked them if they could interview me after work or during the weekend.

Now I don't want to sacrifice the chance of a permenant job due to working in a short contract job, what exactly would one do? Do I tell my current employer? Do I wait until I am finished my contract then start looking for work again?

I have not found myself in this situation before and was wondering what standard practice would be, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot either, you know?

I may also be called for a third interview with a company which for a job which I would really like. I am just unsure how to approach my current employer for time off. She might tell me to feck off, you know? She does seem sound though.

    Thanks people.

All I can say is that the employer cannot refuse you leave to attend an interview however If I was the employer I would annoyed.

The only person who can decide is you. What is more important, two weeks work or a permanent position? Can you suffer two more weeks on social welfare? (So long as you didn't sign off otherwise the red tape will ruin your plans).

You're temping for them - they're gonna know you're looking for other stuff, it's what temps do!

If you have to be interviewed during the day and don't want to be upfront about it just say you have a doctor's appointment or something. Or if you're there through an agency and want to be upfront, run it by the consultant who placed you. Re. the scheduling of interviews, if the potential employers are reasonable they'll help you out by giving you one first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon so you don't miss too much work. Again, you already having a temp job is nothing they won't have come across.

Once you're over that hurdle and have an offer (fingers crossed :D) then you ask how soon they need you. If you can work out your current contract great, if not I don't think any employer would hold it against you not finishing the last couple of weeks of a very short contract when you have a better offer on the table.

I don't understand this part at all.

Also, I was looking for advice and wondering if people were in the same position as me, see what's the best approach without screwing people over. This lady was good enough to give me a job so I don't want to mess her about, at the same time, the prospects of working in a permenant job is extremely appealing. It's a choice I have not had to make in the past...

If I get to round three with the company I really want to work with, then I will have no problem saying I have a doctors appointment.

For the other job, which will be my first interview, I think I will be up front about it and let them know. If the interview is close I can always run down for my lunch. Shouldn't be a problem :)

Do what's right for you OP. Although your employer may be nice you have to think of yourself and don't feel bad for doing so. The last thing you want is to end up back on the dole after your short contract-remember that! Good luck, hope all works out for the best :)

Just tell them you have an interview, they should expect it by now! They can't reasonably think someone will work for a few weeks without looking for something more permanent.

Besides, if you're there for 4 weeks you're entitled to a holiday day.

How about this? Take 2 hours off and work a half hour extra each day, i.e work through Lunch.

My OH is very often taking time off to go to hospital and works Saturdays when she can to make up for it instead of taking holidays.
