O.K so no one wants to hear another crank moan about the costs of a race but here goes, ,,, I used to smoke a lot so when i quit I decided to go into a bit of running keep my wieght down and get fit. I have done loads of runs since then and went on to do Connemarathon last year and dub city and flew over to barcelona in march and done their marathon, thing is it was 45 to do it there, 90 to do it here! more services there and more of the buzz runnning around the city, anyway point is where is the high cost of running going to in Ireland, I recently done Dundalk half and it named Simon cummunity as its official charity, but the of the 30 euro registration not a penny was going to Simon, they were to have buckets collecting money on the day didnt notice them, anyway the orgainisers assured they were gonna make a donation to Simon if there was money left from the costs, one of lads got bottle of water with taste of bleach off it hopefully from river rock factory and not someone re fillling bottles could be hygenic. were is the money going when someone pays 75 to run in Connemarthon? why not lower the price everyone is stuck a bit more than ever. what about Run ireland website who is run by the same peopple, Im lookin to do Newry half with some lads I work with its 25 pounds to enter on their site but its 38 to enter via run ireland. whats the deal pilgrims? are we being robbed? I posted a simelar post on Runireland recenlty and it got loads of backing but its gone, was in most popular threads too. just because your paranoid doesnt mean their not watching!!! I really enjoed Dundalk by the way it was good crack

This is done to death on here. My opinion: If its too dear, don't do it.

Training runs are free. Be more selective in what races you do. Costs will only come down when people are no longer willing to pay over the odds. (There are still lots of good value club organised races on throughout the year).

    High cost?
Its still one of the lowest cost activities out there.
    1. No one is forcing you into these runs. I've often wondered why people dont just run the 5,10,20K etc without the cost associated with it. Sure its not competitive or timed but do you really care?
    2. You use to Smoke...........do you know how much you spent on fags and how much you would be at todays costs? The costs of runs are minimal in comparison.......

Yeah, some of the runs seem expensive and no doubt some people are making a living out of it, what the hell though.
The 5k series in Galway costs feck all and most 10K's I know of arent too dear unless they are a fundraising effort.

    +1 ON COSTS

Done Annerville 10k yesterday, Great course ( 30.46) winning time,
Three water stations +1 at finish, T-SHIRT, over 330 finishers and still sambos and tea and cakes to feed the army across the road, Printed results for everyone that wanted them, How much for all this ?

    e10.00

    Now that's VALUE FOR MONEY

Check on the thread on the Leixlip 5k. 10 euro to enter and an excellent event in every way. Cheaper races don't mean you get treated badly, its seems to be the other way round.

Alot of races see people as a cash cow. As said already, if its too expensive, don't enter. Thats the only way costs will come down because if these events make a profit by threating people as fools, they will continue to exist and more events will follow in their wake.

+1. If you think it is too dear, dont do it, and maybe email the organisers and tell them. You are not obliged to enter and do all these races.
One of the best things about running is that it is essentially FREE. All you need is a pair of runner, shorts and t-shirt and off you go -anytime of day or night.

You never know what subsidies some cheaper races are getting from local councils or sponsorships etc.

Read the following post from a race organiser in Cork BHAA, just to see the costs of putting on a low key race. http://corkrunning.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-much-does-it-cost-to-organise-race.html

There are LOADS of cheap (euro) events out there which are very well run and the organisers can't do enough for you, I did Leenaun, Athenry and Tuam this year and they were excellent.

To be fair, I don't think the OP had €10 races in mind when he talked about poor value for money. I believe this is the shenanigans that he's complaining about:
On the other hand, there seems to be no end of people paying €50 to €80 for some of these new races being held over 'scenic route'

Exactly what im talking about! what kind of pro orgainiser tattle is that, if you dont like price dont run the race, its that kinda approach that leaves unaceptable situations run for years, ok whats the answer?
I dunno but I think stuff only happens threw lobbying and push for change. I have complained to one or two races, but its usually ignored Im not a crank I maybe am the only one thinking this essentially giving someone 70 plus to be surrounded by like minded poeople acheiving something and a tee shirt or medal is a bit steep. It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness! Maybe a thread that does a pub spy type of report, outlining aspects of the race.. value for money , goody bag athomosphere etc/ also the main gripe I have is the people freely giving their cash over to shisters who are making good money pretending the cash is going to charity,Im all for free enterprise but dont be telling me its a chairty event and when ya dig deeper the money is not going to charity at all. Sell crack to kids or something its more nobel.

    I dont get your angst......seriously........
"Sell crack to kids or something, it's more nobel"...............reeeaaaalyyyy........
I am not "pro organiser" in any way and have mentioned the costs of these runs before in a negative light.
As I said, you used to smoke, think of all the money you are saving, even if you did the most expensive of these runs.
Complain all you like, if people continue to enter these events in the numbers they do then the prices will remain the same.
Have you ever tried organizing one of these events by the way? Knowing the cost of overheads would be interesting.

It was intended to get that reaction. I have never orgainised running events, I have however orgainised lots of other weekend long events and seminars, basic maths. if the take at the door covers outlay for rental of venue etc and you can get sponsorship for to cover costs of goodies and nik naks great. anything left goes into the skyrocket. Your prbably right no point in complaining Ill shut my mouth and eat my dinner. and your right, If they can claim to be doing stuff for charity and someone may jump to their defence .. great... Im all anxtie now.

If you are referring to the dundalk half and it being run for charity, when I looked at the website, i never thought for a minute any money was going to charity. Myself and a few others who ran it were very surprised by the response of guy over the charity, and thought it was very low of him to send out an e-mail to all the runners. Overall thought the race was very well run and the entry fee 30E was great value in comparison to other half marathons that charge upwards of between 50 and 70 euro to enter.

I find the BHAA good value for money at the moment for the races from 5k to 10k. Annual membership is €15 and a tenner for every race. No medals or teeshirts, but grub at the end of the race. After the pile of washing tee shirts stack up and you end up using the medals as a windchime in the back garden, the appeal of those souvineers wears off a bit.

Granted, you have to be living in the Dublin or Cork area to get the benefit, but it would be great if there was some kind of 'Season Ticket' that would give you a discount off races during the year. Say if the AAI approve the race, and you had a special membership with the AAI, you would be entitled to a few quid off it. Bit like a frequent flyer or customer loyalty bonus scheme.
