Kit Cars - Insurance and Tax

    Hi Folks,

I know its a Marmite question but I'm thinking about building a kit car. I haven't really decided on a model but it will be one where the chassis stays intact. i.e. A body change only. Total value will hopefully be in the region of €10,000.

Once built, what is the story with insurance and tax? Does it merely come under as if the car has a body kit? So for instance the new "Ferrari" is in fact a Peugeot so it's taxed as a Peugeot. I'd imagine the insurance is higher due to the body kit but is that the only increase?

I thought I read in the UK you have to pass safety test's before your MOT etc. Is that the case here?

Does the NCT come down hard on you for not being a "stock" car?

Thanks in advance for any input / enlightenment :)

    ironclaw.

Sign up to http://www.ikcc.ie/newsite/index.asp before you do anything. have a look at the builds and see if it's for you.

Thanks for the advice. I had a look at their forum. Was hoping to sign up but it appears there is a €50 charge. Might try go to one of their events and ask.

My real query is the tax and insurance, so hopefully someone would have a good idea. Having said that, kit cars don't seem popular this side of the Irish Sea.

for insurance you'd have to declare every single mod...

I was thinking that and probably have to get it inspected / approved. In the UK, the model I'm hoping to build, can be insured for £300. I don't see that happening here.
