I'm on a crappy plan so my data is expensive. I don't want to be online to pull down a map constantly when using GPS.

Can anybody recommend alternative apps for GPS on the HTC Desire that store the maps locally on the phone.

CoPilot. It's not free but it's only £19.99.

Wait a second, you have to be constantly connected to t'internet to use google maps, despite being connected to GPS?

Yeah, the maps aren't stored on your phone. They're downloaded as you go.

Yep although im pretty sure it pre-caches the route but would have to connect again if you take a different turn off or something

Mapdroyd lets you download maps. Used it in Toulouse when i was over there, but only for walking around.Dont think it does turn by turn.

the downloads of the maps are tiny though iirc, doubt they'd be pushing u over ur limit alone.
it does load the navigation for the whole trip and unless u take a wrong turn, wont need to download any further info
cant fault the Google Maps Nav myself so far. Have used it for multiple trips around dublin and cork (athough i miss being able to add via points as these were handy for plotting multi stop trips on my now obsolete sat nav)

I'm on a stupid work plan with O2. When I first got the phone a few meg cost me a fortune so I've turned off all mobile access. I'm trying to get work to upgrade my plan. When I was using an N97 its GPS was essential when abroad. Even if I was on a good plan the data roaming would probably cost a fair bit with Google Maps.

Tried Mapdroyd during lunch. The GPS only seemed to find me once when I turned it on first and then whenever I hit My Location it brought me back to the start of the journey several miles away. I don't know if it's the phone or the app. Ah well at least it's handy for maps.

I might just have to pay a few quid to get something that can track where I am on a map. :P

Im also interested in finding some GPS offline map, going around Europe for 2 weeks in the summer.

Tried downloading MapDroyd there, wouldnt update the maps for me, dunno why, "Could not access update server," I'll try it again later.

Came accros OruxMaps but havent tried it yet.

Surely there has to be a good free offline GPS map out there somewhere!?
