    hey all,

my nct is up at the end of june,so i thought it would be great to get it done early,i just rang up there and next date available is the 6th of august:eek:,
so through no fault of my own i will have to drive around with no nct for over a month,

what is the situation with the gardai on this, surely i cant be fined when i cant get an nct??
i wasnt against the nct before but a 3 month wait for something compulsory is taking the piss!

Accept any date you are given and you'll get a letter in the post confirming this. (If this date doesn't suit you can change online and keep the email). Once you have the letter/email in the car with you you'll be fine.

One of my cars' (that I don't drive over winter) NCT ran out last Dec but I've an email confirming the test for this friday and have gone through numerous check points and I was fine.

Book the NCT and then keep an eye out online for cancellations - if you're flexible with time then you'll get something within the week.

Once you have the NCT confirmation letter with you in the car you will be fine.

Technically the Garda can prosecute you for driving with no NCT but most are understanding souls & will wave you on.
What I would avoid though is driving the car in such a way as to draw attention to yourself e.g. speeding.

If they're in a bad mood then technically they can try and do you for:

    non display of NCT
    driving without NCT
    not producing NCT

All of which will be thrown out of court because you have a booking and there's nothing you can do about the waiting list!

if the nct cant get their act together its not your fault..
my brother's test is up and he rang 5 weeks before the due date and was given sometime in mid july...

they are bringing out or already have one yearly tests on cars and if they cant handle the 2 year tests how in the name of god are they going to handle one... its a joke really...

i have a northern car and rang up that very morning and could get a test that afternoon but decided to go the next morning...

alsi i hate the the nct procedure..

if your car has been sitting up for 20 months, say due to working abroad when you do test it you only get 4 months nct...

in the north you get full 12 months from the day you come in with car no matter what,....

its all about getting as much money as possible out of the motorist i think

Mine's up next month too, I always thought they just sent out a letter with the test date on it?! Does that not happen anymore?

Unfortunatly down here it would be mostly people driving with no nct til they get stopped, then get it nct'd and have it for a year then. How many cars do you go by that have no nct disc or way out of date nct?? I know I pass loads on the roads.

I just rang them there, I couldn't get any date until August either! The woman on the phone said that as long as I've got the letter in the car saying I have the test booked, that's definitely enough for the Gardai if they check.

    +1

My car had been off the road and the NCT was expired. Brought it back on the road with a printed copy of my NCT booking which was a few weeks away. Went through 3 checkpoints and all 3 times was I asked what the story was with the expired NCT. Showed the Garda the booking and in all 3 cases that was fine.

Do they still send out those letters? I'm asking this because I've booked my car for nct back in march. Test is next weekend but still no sign for a letter. :(

I tried to book online 10 days ago and there was nothing available for 6 weeks. I checked the next day and there were suddenly a pile of openings, I took my pick! So keep an eye on the website.

    Passed today btw! :D

Phone them. I was the same. phoned the day before and they said i wasn't booked at all. after some severe shouting i managed to get the same booking i thought i had.

you are intitled to a free nct if you have to wait longer than a month for a test (see point number 4)

I called last month to book a date for my wifes car nct, got a cancellation in the Ballymun test centre 10 days later.

Make sure to ask for any cancellations that may come up.

I knew mine was up at the end of this month and there is no availability on the website for any of the ones in my area.

Going to ring them tomorrow and see what the story is.

When you get it NCT'd you would recieve a disc for the backdated time. So if it was 23 months past an nct you would get 1 month left. But if it passes then there shouldn't be a problem with it passing again so soon :D

No, in your example the certificate will be valid for the next 25* months (1+24*), it will not be backdated since you have presented the car for testing within 3months prior to the next renewal date. The fact you missed 2 years is not a factor.

*If car is 10 years old or older this will be 12 months.
