For the 75, the keys come direct from BMW supplier. Any keys you see on Ebay etc will not work with the 75. They come direct coded for the majority of the car fuctions but you also need to take the car to a dealer with suitable equipment to code the remaining items. From memory, I think the key will run the car in its initial state but needs the dealer coding to get the remote locking working. It might be the other way around though.
Best bet is to call a garage who used to be a rover main dealer. They will sort you out or else get on to one of the specialists in the uk. They will be able to order the key from factory for you but you will still need someone with testbook or whatever the coding equipment required is to get the full function. Looking at near €300 all in Id say

Scary if you express that as a percentage of the value of the car!

    €300?

lol thats a bit much, like 10-15% of the car value at a conservative estimate. So the keys from ebay are useless then? Even if I take out the remote locking facility - they cant be used no?

Im 99% sure that only a key ordered specifically for your car will actually work.
Another problem, if there have been more than 2 or 3 keys ordered previously, no more keys can be got without replacing a a control unit also. For security I guess.
At least its a bmw system & so full factory support is still there.

grand so i'll go to a BMW dealer then?
(sorry at the seemingly inane line of questioning, I just presumed I could buy one off ebay and go through a series of starting the car, ulocking the doors etc to program the key to my car, obviously not, no?)

    Thanks for the offer :)

Is that spare a cut key or an uncut key? I have been told by a mate that its possible to reprogram an uncut key to a different code, but not if its already cut.

I dont know if bmw dealer will do it for you. Ex rover dealer is best option or google uk rover parts specialists. They will defo sort the key to match your car. Coding then needed here. By all acounts its a very uick coding procedure

who would do the coding then, would I go to an ex rover dealer for that too? I can see the expense of this mounting up as we speak!

I got a new 75 key from Ryans garage in blanchardstown. They are a rover garage and have the equipmant to code the key.
They order the key from germany. It was approx E180 for key then E30 for coding.
Not cheap but then no option.
