Just listening to that wanker on Pat Kenny's show this morning.

**** on about costs, and people not working hard enough.

Perhaps it coincidental but grade inflation under the third level stewardship of Walsh and his ilk has been proven beyond doubt.

The universities and third level institutions ran up huge budget deficits under the stewardship of Walsh and his ilk.

Today Walsh is in hand wringing mode "we're living beoyond our means" and/or "this country needs to invest in the smart economy".

There's too much self-abuse going on there to get the complete gist.

Walsh ran UL. He courted benefactors from the US for the expansion of his college and didn't go down the defecit or debt route AFAIK.

If he says we were living beyond our means, he is not telling lies.

Costs are a huge reason for the plethora of FDI pullouts, not least Dell in Limerick where Walsh operated from.

I fail to get your gripe.

    Sure he's not half wrong.

And in terms of grade inflation, its clear to see where the pressure is coming form. Sure look at the government putting pressure on the third level institutes to accept students who have failed maths! Talk about avoiding the problem...

    Really?

In 2008, UL ran at a loss.
In 2002, UL ran at a loss.
In 2003, UL made a small surplus.
In 2004, UL ran at a loss.
In 2005, UL ran at a loss.
In 2006, UL ran at a loss.
In 2007, UL ran at a loss.

Walsh and his successors have presided over a decade of losses at UL.

And we're expected to listen to him and his kind lecture us!

    He's a spoofer.

Considering we have free college education here its not a massive surprise that colleges make a loss. The alternative is like in the US where you end up with a degree and 40,000 dollars in debt.

Funny you don't sound like someone who would benefit from/enjoy the Pat Kenny show?

I used to have a lot of time for Ed Walsh, until I noticed him make a few statements supporting Israel and criticizing Palestinians and Arabs. For example, he made an extraordinary outburst of criticism against Hamas, and in support of the Israeli bombing of Palestine, on the Frontline last year. He wasn't asked about this issue, nor was it being discussed at the time.

I was surprised and disappointed to find Ed Walsh at this again on the Pat Kenny radio show. He was ostensibly there to talk about job creation and innovation, however he segues bizarrely, into praising Israel and implying criticism of Arabs. To listen download the podcast and forward to 8 mins 50 secs:
" ... so thats the only thing we can do. Israel is an example of success, you know they have the same land as the Arabs.... but what a success they have created, through using their educational system, through using their research capability, but more importantly linking that to smart business expertise ....."

Colleges receive fees directly from the exchequer, so "free" fees make no difference to their pocket. Do the "registration fees" (€1500 p.a.) go to the state or the uni though?

    $40,000 ???

Only if you skip the last three years.

I used a ballpark figure. Care to enlighten us what a more realistic figure is?

Care to add something to the conversation while your at it?

He seemed to be saying $160,000, which is a fair enough contribution. I, on the other hand, am contributing absolutely nothing on this thread, possibly causing it to spiral into uncontrollable debt.
