Ive just seen an ad on setanta advertising Magners League for next season.

Thought this was gone to RTE.

Any breakdown of what Setanta has for 2011.

Looks like the same as in 2010, with the Magners League a definite grey area as nothing been officially announced yet.

What odds RTE will buy the Magners League as a bargaining chip to obtain some of Setanta's rights to next year's Rugby World Cup, hence a large chunk of the league stays on Setanta?

yes the story that rte/tg4 had won the rights first appeared in the sunday business post last october.. not an official word since apart from some articles every so often that refer to rte/tg4 having the rights. the irish times mentioned rte next year a while back.. and i posted a link in another thread of an interview with someone from rte marketing that mentions having magners league next year.
so i would say yes rte/tg4 have it. the question is has setanta got any of the scraps left that rte/tg4 wont be showing..

I can't see either channel devoting any more than two games a weekend between them considering RTE have never shown any interest in the Magners League.

If it really is the case that the Magners League is only being bought as a bargaining chip for RTE to get World Cup games off Setanta, then if I were Setanta at the bargaining table, I would simply say "You can have as many World Cup games as you want, but we keep the Magners League. You can have highlights."

Rang to cancel yet again after getting it for €5 a month for the past 9 months at least and I was adament this time that I was getting rid of it. In the end managed to get it for €2.99 per month for July, Aug and Sept. Definitely worth doing. They seem desperate to hold on to their subscribers at the moment!

Which is useless if you are not a Mancester United or a Liverpool supporter.

I miss the "good ole days" when you just paid one sub to Sky and you got everything that was on. This thing of paying Sky for X and ESPN for Y and Setanta for Z just makes the whole lot more expensive and more hassle! :(

Result: I just pay Sky for their package and live without the rest.

How this is supposed to be good for the customer I don't know as Sky have certainly never lowered their prices since it started.

Don't expect a broadcaster or sporting organisation to do anything that is good for the customer.

Its primarily due to the Eu and their rules to avoid monopolies of TV rights.
However in this case as in many others ,the end user ends up getting screwed for more money as they have to buy multiple subs instead of just one.
Sometimes you are better off with a monopoly.

Sky have actually been showing more Premier League games than they ever have before. The 3pm Saturday games were never held by Sky.

Premier League will not allow any 3pm games to be shown live in the UK. So Setanta shower us with Top Four goodies (against bottom half strugglers), and charge us 17 yoyos for the (dubius) priviledge. My €5 offer ends in a couple of weeks & I have a contact name in Scotland to ring if I want to renew :D
Sky have 5 of the 6 Premier League from next season. That leaves ESPN with the other, most likely the 5.15pm Saturday games, so I think most people will settle for Sky only. Which means that Setanta will have to come well up to the mark if they want to retain/get more customers. Nothing on their website so far.

Not trying very hard to keep customers I might add. I emailed customerservicesire@setanta.com> last month to give a months notice and got this.

    "Thank you for your communication.

We are sorry to hear that you no longer wish to subscribe to Setanta Sports. We have valued your custom over the past 3 years and 9 months.

We have the best premium live sport on TV including top flight Premier League and FA Cup football, the best golf action from the Masters and the Open exclusively live, coverage of the Magners league and action from the GAA. We would love you to continue to enjoy this.

So if you would like to withdraw your cancellation request please contact us before the 12/05/10 and we would be more than happy to apply a special offer.

In the meantime, your account has now been scheduled for cancellation in accordance with our current cancellation guidelines. Your service will cease on or about 12/05/10 and your final payment will be taken on 16/04/10.

After which no further monies should be debited from your account.
    "

I then asked about the offer and had they any new sporting rights.

    "Thank you for your email.

We can offer you 3 months viewing at a reduced rate of €9.99. Currently we have not acquired any new sporting rights. However, we are about to start broadcasting the US Masters tournament Live from Augusta this Wednesday coming.

The FA Cup semi-finals will be broadcast live over next weekend as well as action from the FA Premier League between West Ham and Sunderland.

Further ahead, we will be showing the rest of the Formula 1 and Magners league season.

We hope you will consider this offer as acceptable as we do have some excellent content coming up and we don't want you to miss it.

If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our customer service team on the number below and one of our colleagues will be happy to help. We are open from 9am – 9pm 7 days a week.

    Kind Regards

    Setanta Customer Services

    "

Anyway I never replied and they never came back to me and it's knocked off today. I would of took €5 last month let alone 2.99.

With the connection fee I wont be getting it back, ringing sky now to cancel sky sports 1.

Top 4? Manchester United first. If they are not available then Liverpool and if not them then Chelsea or Arsenal. Anyone who doesn't support the first two would get absolutely no value from it.

I do not understand why they do not get the rights to show two 3pm games every Saturday. That would help subscriptions.

as a united fan that doesn't disappoint me, but i can see where other fans might get cheesed off..

however that is replicated across all channels. i would even argue that the only reason Liverpool weren't shown most on setanta was that ESPN had them scheduled for the Monday night game nearly every week. i don't remember united having a Monday night game this season, but Liverpool seems to have one at that slot every week..

i do realize it could also have to do with champions league being on tuesday and wednesday

anyway, matters not, i'm canceling my setanta now, munster away games aren't enough to make me pay for it, can go to the pub for those anyway
