logging onto facebook as "invisible"

how do you do this? i'd like the option of checking messages or looking at photos etc without being visible as being on-line to others. i know it can be done as i've received messages/comments from others who don't actually appear as "on-line". would be handy so i don't always end up "chatting" to people who can see i'm on-line.

can u do this for gmail also?

Open the chat box, go to "options" and choose "offline"

is that for FB or both? when u hit "offline" is that permanent unless u un-check it again? i can't figure out how it works with gmail.

Facebook, In Gmail you just choose "invisable". It stays off until you enter the chatbox again.

where do i find that? sorry but can't find that option. would u mind explaining in more detail pls? i've been thro a few menu's but no "invisible" or "off-line" option.
