Claiming One parent payment and travelling

    Hi,

    I'm a single parent. I am applying for my Masters this year but am hoping to defer the second semester and travel for 12 months with my son. I teach I.T. here and would hope to get a job abroad, prob Aus, and put my son in a school over there. My question is this - is it possible to continue to get my one parent family while I'm in Aus? My payment goes directly into my bank account so I don't need to "sign on". Are there any systems linked between Ireland and Aus regards earning over the amount I am allowed to earn whilst on lone parent payment and tax benefits etc? Is there a possibility of being caught for social welfare fraud?

    Any advice would be great! Really need to get out of this country for a while! Plus I think it'd be great for my son to experience another country for a while.

    Okay. Let's take this slowly. Remember when you applied for your one parent family allowance, you signed forms? While signing these forms you were in effect signing a legal document. You were also declaring that you would notify the dept if there were any change in your circumstances. Now, I would consider leaving the country for a year as a major change. As an allegedly educated woman I'm sure you understand that this allowance is only payable if you are LIVING in Ireland. And living in Australia for a year means you are not resident here - ie you have no entitlement to this allowance.

    If you want your son to experience another country's culture - I as a tax payer do not want to pay for it. Why should I? How dare you contemplate fraudulently stealing money for you to gallivant around the world. The bloody cheek of you.

    Yes, you will be found out. There are frequent review forms sent out, and when these are not returned your payment will be stopped. There will also be follow up enquiries, and depending on how much money you have stolen, possible legal action. You may be prosecuted and you will definitely have to repay all the money you have stolen. And another thing, you would be surprised with the amount of people being reported for welfare fraud, so it is very likely that a family member of friend will have reported you before SW find out.

    It won't be very easy getting an IT job with a criminal record.

    Rules
    To qualify for a One-Parent Family Payment you must:
    * Be the parent, step-parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian of a qualified child. A qualified child is a child under 18 years of age or aged 18-22 and in full-time education.
    * Be the main carer of at least one qualified child and that child must live with you. One-Parent Family Payment is not payable if a couple has joint equal custody of a child or children.
    * Have earnings of €425 or less per week
    * Satisfy a means test
    * Be habitually resident
    * Not be cohabiting (that is, living with someone as husband and wife).

    So because I won't condone fraud - I am self righteous???

    You want to steal money to go travelling. That is fraud. I answered your question.

    LOL, the Op wants the dept of SW to fund her travels and sons childcare while she works in another country!!!!!!!!

    I don't know if that is arrogance or ignorance.

    I presume you are planning on going to Austrailia on a working holiday visa?
    You cannot take a child with you on a working holiday visa. As a single parent you can apply but you will have to leave your child at home with grandparents or the likes.
    Although are you born in 77 as your username may suggest? If so you are too old to apply for a working holiday visa.
    Other visas such as a sponsered visa would require you finding a job before you get there and you will find it extremely difficult to find a company to sponsar you and your child for 12 months. Sponsared visas are for 4 years.

    As for the question you asked regarding your lone parents claim.... Well thats already been answered for you.

    You might want to re think your plans.

    Is there bans/warnings handed out to people who come on to this forum and ask questions regarding fraudulent activities? In other forums illegal activities would'nt be tolerated.
