Yeah, unless you're exceptionally talented and extremely lucky, you won't go straight into your own office. Plus, you're talking about the bureaucratic aspect of science there, not a lot in DCU with that.

In terms of an excellent course that's likely to have jobs, Environmental Science & Health FTW! I like it so much I decided to do second year twice. Plus, it's still a growing sector, there will pretty certainly be jobs.

However, there will almost certainly be research in the field, it goes with the territory. You won't get a nice comfy office job with it. Maybe rethink your priorities. I'd love to go straight into a postgrad, doctorate then lecture immediately. But that ain't gonna happen, gotta be realistic.

Why don't you do common entry science and then decide after first year.

    What???

    pss

About CES, with the increasing number of students going into science next September, or going into 3rd level for that matter, if you choose to do CES - there may be very little option to do some courses when it comes to 2nd year. This happened this year - so it wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't happen again next year.

Ha, I repeated second year, I was being cavalier.

I did CES and missed out on the Global Classroom option for ESH. Granted, I didn't want to do it. But still, you will have to take that kinda thing into account.

    +1
and just to point out a common misperception that it adds a year to your degree, it doesnt! 4 years like the rest of them and you wont be missing out on anything as all the other science courses do the same first year.

If you aren't sure what to choose just yet, common entry into science is a good starting point, it's a 4 year course like the others but you don't have to decide until the end of first year what your specific discipline will be.

It really depends on what aspects of science you enjoy, pure chemistry - Chem and pharmaceutical science would be good, chem with biology: analytical science.. Biology: genetics and cell biology etc..

The major problem with CES is that the choices are snapped up quickly, all the places in genetics and cell biology are already filled for next year's second years...

You say you want to work in a hospital with your own office straight away, while that goal is a little bit unrealistic, it's good to have a goal, what sort of work would you be interested in though?
