BT's are the best on fox

Q2. What is the best choice for (A)DEER. (B)Varmint Fox/Rabbits
    A - leaning towards BT's now
B - BT/HP for fox and HP for rabitts

It all depends on the shots you're taking. For rabbits, hollowpoint .22 subs all the way. For foxes, any hollowpoint or ballistic tipped round, as they all expand quickly. For deer, if you were neck and head shooting the vast majority, you'd use a lighter, more explosively expanding round, or if you were shoulder shooting, you'd use something much tougher to break those bones. I like the Hornady SST design in principle - not had a chance to try it on live game yet. The initial expansion is quite fast, so you get that effect you'd like for shots behind the shoulder or into the head or neck, but it holds together well, so if you had to break the shoulders, you could.

I used to use soft point 140 grain in the 6.5/55, last season i used the Norma 120 grain ballistic tips from my experience last season i would not go back to the 140 grain soft points, the Norma are a cracking round.

The lads i stalk with use .243 and 25.06, they use 95 grain hornady sst and federal 70 grain ballistic tip in the .243 both very explosive and ideal for head and neck shooting.

In the 25.06 he uses 100 grain federal ballistic again a very good round.

I definatley wouldnt go back to soft points and the lads i stalk with swear by the ballistic tips.

Shot some of the 100gr ballistic tips out of my .25-06. They're stupidly fast and flat, and shooting them into clay, gave massive, massive expansion. Great round, but at €45 a box, steep enough.

Yeah, but it'll be a target rifle. :) Next hunting rifle will either be a rimfire or something a bit bigger and even more expensive to feed.

Well if things go well this year and the bonus it good i might splash out and get another rifle.

my .223 is to heavy, long and magnified for lamping. I'd love a small dainty rifle for lamping and the like.
And to have a dedicated .223 for Long range rabbits/targets, re-barreled and custom stock tailored to me.

But it depends on what the local CS says at the end of the day:D
I don't fancy another interview

he'll probably have retired by then anyway; they are dropping like flies these days with the pension cuts due to come into effect next year; But thats another thread!

So Ballistic tip's are doing well in the poll's
I'm awaiting the return of people who were on the Range today to see what happens.

It was into a bank I was zeroing in, checked my 100 yard zero with some 200 yard clay pigeons, just as a rough guide, splattered them all, found the massive holes when I was picking up bits of clays. Could have put my head in them nearly. But you're right, the .25 is not a cheap and cheery calibre for target shooting!

    in my .223 i prefer hornady v-max 55gr BT.
in my 6.5x55 i used 120gr norma BT.
in my cz style i use winchester subs 40gr HP.;)

Bunnies I use only hollow points in subsonic or HV

Foxes I use BT's or hollow points, never had much faith in SP's

    Don't shoot deer, yet

    Foxes, ballistic tips.

Rabbits, used to be hollow point, will be ballistic tips when I get HMR sorted.

Don't shoot Bambi yet so can't say.

Balistic tips are in the lead.
I was expecting soft nose, but I also thought more deer hunters would vote.

Any more deer hunters out there to poll yet??

i am shooting a sako85 30-06 i am using 150 grain soft poin (sakos own brand) i have not lost an animal yet with them i dropped them all on the spot head shots up to 100yds anything beyond that and heart lung shots i am shooting mainly sika the longest shot was a doe at 162yds. started with these when i first bought the rifle they are shooting 3/4inch group at 100yds.So i would think it is really what works best for both the hunter and the rifle.

I was thinking about one myself at one point. Statistics look good. i don't personally know anyone that fires one.
So was it a boy or a child ? ;)

Was talking about the ballistics with dwighet a while back. His 7mm-08 shoots about as flat as my .25-06, with less recoil and the shorter, lighter action. His rifle weighs about as much as most pistols though, so it seems sharp enough, never shot it myself, but there's a good video of clive cursing the recoil. :p It's an excellent round though, well worth a look.

James McBride tried to sell me one when i bought my .308.
I was hesitant at the time as I knew F'all about them.
Round availability could be an issue though.

The more odd ball one goes the easier a Gun dealer can say Ammo's gone up!!

Ammo availability and price is actually very good indeed, much better than you'd think! A good few dealers I know of stock it, so wouldn't worry there.

I'd need another rifle though. Hard to find a reason for third, and having to gop through all the interviews forms etc does not appeal to me for now.

So it's .308 bay all the way!

Like I said, could sell your .223 and your .308, put the money towards a custom 6mm and spend the rest on ammo, since that'll do everything!

Nope! I could afford the custom, it's hunting i love. Range only the odd times.
Never be without a .223, crackin round on bunny heads, Foxes, magpies, Grey crows and the like.

If i go custom first will be my .223! Then buy another

it's the criteria for 5 or more firearms that bugs me!

Ballistic tipped are doing very well in the poles.
I think Hollow point are giving false readings as I did not mean in .22lr Calibre.

I'm just wondering whats the most common round out there?

there is a few more days to poll yet so if yee guys could get yer mates to vote and see what is the common consensus on the best hunting rounds for knock down power and accuracy.

Back in the day nobody used BT;s so I'd be very interested to know who uses them these days.

I was using ballistic tips on foxes from my hornet, but on recieving 4 free boxes of remington 45gr hollow points i re zeroed and have to say the damage and stopping power was quite significant and better than the 35 grain bt. I use hp for bunnies and other vermin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭T.H.308

I tend to find 150gr sp best for sika & fallow, Have found bt to expand to fast causing more damage than wanted, fox's definitely bt and 50gr hp for wabbits:).

    A) I have been using SP for the past few years Federal Powershop and last year Lapua Mega 139gr (worked fine so far, would like to try the BT but they are expensive...) (shot placement is more important than bullet choice - in my view)

    B) rabbits have always used HP for the past 20 odd years -they never complained so far

    Silly Question
Can you get BT for .22lr?

    Deer
Always use a boat tail. Usually Hornaday. Used to shoot 105grain, but now only 185grain: 30-06. I have never seen a deer run. They have all just dropped. Even the ones I have missed have had heart attacks due to the BOOM!

For Varmints it is the 223 - watch the twist though.

The 22-250 was an initial choice, however, the availability and cost of the 223 helped in the decision.

Oops, I thought by BT you meant boat tail. I shoot soft nose.
