I have a cat5 (i think!) cable running from the router to my xbox upstairs. Is it possible to get a splitter so I can hook up both my XBOX & PC to the router the same cable?

Use a hub/switch or router and connect the pc and xbox to that. The switch will allow for sharing of the internet to both devices.

You can't share cables like you can with phone cables, each device must have its own route back to the router. The suggestion above is a valid one.

In the strictest terms, you shouldn't split a cat5e cable, but the reality is that 100meg ethernet only uses 4 of the 8 cores in the cat5e. You could use something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/RJ45-Cat5-Ethernet-10Mb-100Mb-Network-Splitter-UK-/250613458067?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item3a59b9e493

DO be aware that if you go down this road, you probably won't get the full 100megabit throughput, and you will certainly never run 1gigabit (as gigabit ethernet requires all 8 cores)

Or you could go with listermint's suggestion - but use a switch rather than a hub
