Gerry Ryan's Wikipedia Page

Has anyone seen Gerry ryan's wikipedia page? Boards.ie is now listed as the first source of news of his death:

At 14:30 a member of online forum boards.ie created a thread entitled "Gerry Ryan is dead" [60]. She stated "My uncle who works as an ambulance driver just texted me that Gerry Ryan died, RIP". The original post was ammended by a moderator at 16:07 to read: RTÉ did not officially reveal Ryan's death until 15:30; however some of his colleagues could not wait to reveal the news.

That's mad. Feels a little surreal as I remember that girl posting it, and now there it is on his wikipedia page. So his death wasn't officialy announced until an hour later. I suppose it brings up the question again of whether her and her uncle, (a paramedic), were right to have done what they did. It also shows how amazingly fast the internet works...

If it's true, her uncle should not have texted people-I'm pretty sure it's a breach of ethics. His immediate family may not have necessarily been informed by then-what a way to find out of a loved one's demise.

Jesus I remember The Zohan criticizing her and thinking to myself "Shut up man, stop preaching" But Jesus, that is bad. Didn't realise it was leaked like that originally as by the time I had read the post it had been snipped.

I was telling people about the rumour within minutes of reading that post..it was ages later before it was confirmed and in that time somebody could've easily rang one of his relatives to ask about it..it would've been very unpleasant to hear it like that.
Still, times they are a changing and sites like boards have more value as sources of information than people might imagine.

His death on Wikipedia had been updated before it was confirmed on the news if I remember rightly. I couldn't believe how quickly it had been updated. I had googled it after reading that girls post looking for confirmation.

I do however hope that her uncle was severly reprimanded (suspended) for making that text. That has to be a serious breach of privacy laws (data protection act??) and against regulations.

yeah i read the original post on boards before it was amended

Honestly I don't see the big deal.

The man's dead and buried let him RIP.

It's just a wiki page talking about a boards comment ffs.

To be honest, although the Uncle probably shouldn't have sent the text... I don't think what he did was a big deal. It wasn't like he knew it would be posted on the internet.

To be fair it was also all over Twitter. Anyone can update a wiki page, it's not a big deal.

No, but on that same note, if he sent it to his niece, he probably sent it to almost his whole phone book too.

I have no problem with the wiki page or twitter. I just think it was very wrong for the paramedic to text the news. He is meant to be a professional and he acted very unprofessionally in this case.

Tbh it was a VERY stupid thing to do as a paramedic. You should NEVER talk about your patients outside of work. But what makes you think just cos he sent it to his niece it also involved the whole phone book?

I agree 100%. It was a very unprofessional and stupid thing to do.

It's the wiki page I don't see a big deal about tbh.

Thing is, his partner found him, she's likely to have contacted family before the paramedic contacted the boards member

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,068 ✭✭✭yermandan

It still doesnt take away from the fact that the paramedic acted wholly unprofessionally

I dont think the paramedic was at fault..he removed the body of one of the most famous men in the country and i suppose he had to tell somebody about it..i know i would've...what perhaps he didnt reckon on was the person he told going on boards and telling thousands of other people, ten years ago nobody wouldve known bar maybe three or four other people who the cousin may have told but news travels fast these days..its nobody's fault, just the way the "information superhighway" has evolved.

Shouldnt be using his phone while driving in the first place.

The body was not removed from the apartment when it was found - if memory serves me right it was removed later that afternoon according to a story on breakingnews.ie. So there are some questions to be asked about the accuracy of the post on boards - and that would also lead me to ask if the poster actually got a text from her paramedic uncle or not.

But we live in an age where the internet will spread information like wildfire. And more often than not, verifying the information is the tricky bit.

I would think there is a matter of confidentiality breached on the paramedics part.

    Yes but what confidentiality?
As i said he was one of the most famous men in the country and this guy had just stuck him in the back of an ambulance.
If it were you who removed the body, could you have kept your gob shut?I kinda doubt it..

The pictures on breakingnews showed a undertakers ambulance. They would not be crewed by paramedics. There was speculation that they could have sent the message

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭nocal

The undertakers could not have sent the message - because they did not arrive at the scene until about 16:00....

How do you know it was a paramedic?
Dont believe everything you read on boards.

I'm closing this for now, it may or may not be reopened
