Biting point on new clutch.

    Hi,

    I just have a quick question. I got a new clutch installed today and was surprised how low the biting point is. With the old clutch the biting point was fairly close to the top but with the new one the biting point starts about an inch from the floor.

    Is this usual with a new clutch?

    I read that a new clutch will have a low biting point and as it wears the biting point will rise? not sure if this is true though...

    The car is a 01 VW polo.

    yeah thats right, the higher the biting point generally means more wear on the clutch

    i also have an 01 Polo. Replaced the clutch last sept. It went from being heavy and having a high biting point to soft and low biting point.

    Ya thats pretty much how mine is now. It has a fairly wide biting point aswell now.

    Just had a new clutch fitted with much the same bite charateristics, but on ours now the first 2 inches nothing happens, just play, and it sometimes does not return to its default position, coming to rest 2 inches short of where it should be, any idea what gives?

    New clutch will have a lower biting point. Its shouldnt be uncomfortably close to the floor though.

    I'd need to check the receipt back home. I had to get a few jobs done on my polo, there was a 2nd hand gearbox, clutch kit and ignition coil that needed changing and that was 550euro in total including labour.

    I'm fairly sure the clutch kit was 115euro. But I'm not sure what labour cost would be involved with that, maybe someone else here might be able to give you an idea.

    Well, I got a clutch put in my Hyundai Coupe V6 a few weeks back. The kit itself was about € 200. But the labour was a further €400 or so. It's a 6 hour job (so I was told). They have to drop the subframe, crack the bell housing connecting the gearbox to the engine, drop the gearbox, replace the clutch and finally reassemble everything. Not a trivial job. Labour cost is what hurts.

    Note: I got mine done at a main dealers. If you go somewhere lol the Redcow Gearbox guys, they might be cheaper.
