The 1.6, yes. Not the 1.4. I'd go with the Yaris because the OP is 18. He's missing out on the Fiesta though.

VW Golf - despite the CC (smallest petrol engine 1.4) it's low power so insurance friendly. Good to average fuel economy, easy to keep running (just watch out to keep timing belt in good nick). You might forsake a few things on cheaper models (e.g. e/w) compared to something like a Civic, but it's a comfy ride. Should be lots of 5 door models second hand if passengers are a consideration.

That's all very boring stuff I know, and the chassis on late 90s/early 00s wasn't exactly inspiring, but it's got mahussive wheel arches relative to the size of the car, meaning if it's your bag you can fit 17 inch wheels.

i was looking at this on donedeal.ie. insirance is quoted at 2,450 on 123.ie. is this model any good?

as for the golf ive 3 friends with golfs, two with late 90's one and the other with a '03 or '04 all gti's and they say that they give alot of trouble. plus having worked in a motor factors i know that parts are expensive

i drive a yaris and it is the most reliable car ive ever driven. 10 years old and not a sound out of the engine, and you literally have to drive near the petrol station and the tank is full :D insurance is so cheap as its a 1.0litre as well. Its a nippy little thing too, great pickup, and a really smooth drive, never gives me trouble. Wouldnt be doing high speeds in it though, especially on a motorway, they're easy enough to flip apparently, and I can feel it swaying a bit when I do 120kph on the motorway :P
