lying on your CV

    Hi guys,
Just looking for a bit of advice on this. I'm looking for summer work at the moment, but I have no real work experience in shops or retail and I was considering putting down that I worked in a petrol station or supermarket. Is there anyway that the future employer can check this out other than actually ringing the place that i "claim" to have worked for. Is this really bad/illegal to do?:( Any advice appreciated!!
    Cheers,
    Mark

Besides contacting the last place for references, it might also look a bit funny when you have no tax cert, or P45. (And by "funny" I mean "like you lied".)

Embelish a bit here and there sure, to make yourself stand-out from the crowd, thats understandable.
However, to lie outright? If I was the employer and found out, you'd have no chance of getting any work. I don't think it's worth the risk to be honest.

Sure just tell them you have a degree in filling petrol, nobody argues with degrees!

I could say that i was paid cash if I just put down a petrol station, Is there anyway they can find out from your PPS number?

It's tricky - all you need is for the interviewer to know that the petrol station you picked doesn't do that. Never ever underestimate how small Ireland can be - if you list a petrol station in the arse end of nowhere, you can guarantee that the interviewer's second cousin is married to the guy that does the books, and coincidentally they were over at his house last week.

While people might get away with lying on their CVs in other countries, I'd strongly advise against it in Ireland.

When you put it like that , I could see how it could get very messy and embarressing, thanks for the heads up!

Personally, I've fleshed out every job in my CV so that it lasted longer than it really did (well, only if the employment was actually short). I don't think you'd get away with making up jobs on the spot though.

However, sticking down that you did a bit of work with a company that's no longer around could work. One of the last places I worked is no longer around. The recession didn't take kindly to it at all, so I could put down that I worked there for twenty years and future employers would be none the wiser.

If you've no P45 just stick down that you did it voluntarily or something. However, as said above, be very careful, because the interviewer knowing the company you "volunteered for" will kill your lie in it's tracks.

If I was you i would stick down that you worked in one of the many retailers that have closed down in recent months (dont want to mention any here)

Jesus wept. Is there a single person in the country who has'nt lied about one thing or another on their CV. Just pick a company that's gone bust recently and give them a friends mobile number claiming they where the manager/supervisior at said place of work. Most employers don't even follow up on CV referees anyway's.
