Do you just send it in by post and wait? or is there somewhere you can call in and wait while its done?

    Thanks

I'd say if you go to the motor tax office you'll be able to drive with the receipt you get until they post the licence to you a few days later.

It works that way with the learner's permit, so I wouldn't say it's much different.

Yeah you can definitely drive with the receipt...they're pretty quick at posting it out to you too so you won't be waiting long at all:)

Best way to do it is to call into the Motor Tax Office, and then they'll post it out to you.

I applied for mine on a Wednesday afternoon in the Motor Tax Office and the licence arrived in the post on the Friday. Very quick.

Technically, you're supposed to carry the licence (pink piece of paper) with you at all times when driving. But as anyone who's studied Irish law can tell you, "technically" means "not at all" :P

Seriously though, it is an offence to drive without it. I don't know what the fine is, but if you've a genuine reason like that, it's not enforced strictly, if at all.

Apparently it's not an offence once you have passed your test and have the receipt proving you've applied for and are waiting for the license. They told me that in the tax office & if they're got it wrong then a whole lot of people better be careful!!!

Wow, that's a while...I got mine within 2 days. Maybe there was a bit of a backlog. Lol it's funny but I didn't expect mine so quickly & when it came I put the envelope aside thinking it was something else & I waited impatiently for nearly 2 weeks. I was so embarrassed when I opened the (not official looking at all) envelope & realised I'd had it all along!!:o

Ahh sure they'd say mass! :p

It's obviously not as serious having the receipt as having nothing at all, since your driver number is on it and it's proof that you are qualified to have a licence. But it's still not a licence in itself, so bare that in mind if you're stopped. Go with "sorry Garda, my licence is still in the post" rather than "what d'ya mean, the law says I can drive with this!"

(Incidentally, if you ever find yourself quoting "the law" without knowing what paragraph of what section of what act of what year it is, chances are you're making it up.) :D
