Saw a great one today. Went to the warehouse clearance at DID Tallaght today but didnt see anything I needed, although the wife did pick up a new iron in the normal store (not the clearance) and paid €39.99.

At home we had a look through the Argos catalogue.

    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=30001&catalogId=1500002201&langId=-1&searchTerms=9009875.

I work in retail and know every arguement about shipping, VAT and warehouse V retail store, but nothing, and I mean nothing, explains this one.

Guarantee you this Iron will be on a WOW 50% off offer next catalogue promotion. Argos reularly pull this one.

    Yep, how about this one...

    Call of Duty MW2

    Amazon.co.uk - 24.98 (less than €30)
    Argos.ie - €69.79

Argos are not now, nor rarely ever were, cheap. They sell at rrp or a little above on most items, in my experience of them. As with all purchases, if you dont shop around to check prices first, you may well pay over the odds.

In fairness now, at least the OP was comparing like-with-like. UK Website VS Irish Brick 'n' Mortar is hardly fair.

I appreciate that post. A lot of posts on rip off are not really relevant.

This one though, is. As you said, bricks and mortar store V bricks and mortar.

Online deals are not a fair comparison.

But back to the main post, I will certainly think twice before I visit Argos for anything.

Argos is one of the biggest rip offs I have ever seen I often wonder how it is still in business

Argos has ALWAYS been ridiculously overpriced when it comes to games, prob because the prices are only ever revised twice a year with the new catalogue.

Specialised video game shops will always be cheaper than argos. That said, the internet kicks everyones ass.

Argos take the piss wherever they are, and their "sale" prices are more or less the same as what other retailers charge normally.

Can Argus not be reported to Consumers Association of Ireland or Uk for blatant over-pricing of their merchandise or can they just get away with it in this way? Surely not. I recall that there used to be a number the public could call in UK if there was an issue with over-pricing. I tend to now do a price compare of the retailers who sell the item I want and then also check with online sites. That is the only way I can be sure that I am not being made an idiot of by any of them.

There's nothing to report. A shop sets a price they want for their goods and either you buy them or you don't. The only area you could be reporting a high price is when a monopoly exists and there is no alternative but to pay an extortionate price. In this case there is plenty of alternative players in the market selling the same product.

Absolutely no way. Any shop can set any price for the iron. Its down to want people will pay for it.

Thanks for that. We would be better boycotting shops who we see doing this. That might wake them up. What I find even more infuriating is that nomatter what I buy here at home, I always see the same item cheaper in Uk when I visit. Now that really is annoying. I can only speak for my own local supermarkets, but the quality of fruit and veg is truly disgraceful and would not be tolerated in other countries; items which are clearly going off are even displayed. No wonder there are so many flies around!

I started this tread and this will be my last post on this issue. And I do declare, I am a shop owner but not in this line !!!

My original point was an iron, in two stores, practically next to each other.

The comparison was like for like, bricks and mortar store v the same.

You cannot compare anything in the UK with Ireland. Its completely different. Rent, wages and all the rest.

    Good luck.

I take your point and am fully aware of those differences you refer to, but that does not explain why exact items are sometimes even double the price here. Even our own consumers association has investigated this. Also, when one sees shoddy substandard goods being sold on a daily basis it is a fully justified reason for complaint/discussion. Many people are just not confident enough to complain and simply put up with bad service. I complained once that I could not buy and ice cream cone in my local shop as the assistant who serves it always puts the flake on top with the same dirty hands she uses to handle cash. Yuck! What happended? She is still doing it!!!

Thank you and have a nice evening.

i have only one thing to say
argos is over the top with their prices, how they are still in business beats me,
i have seen items in their catalogue, and then see these same items in shops that i would call pricey, yet they would be yards cheaper in these shops
