Hi - Would anyone know anything about pursuing a law career in Australia with an Irish degree?

Gavin-Duffy, an Irish Prime Minister in New South Wales had set up a facility whereby an Irish qualified lawyer, solicitor or barrister could be called to the NSW bar. This in turn, it is said, entitled one to a call to the UK bar.

May be a good place to start your enquiries.

Their legal system is common law, but afaik no great distinction between barristers and solicitors - i.e. I have known Australian lawyers who describe themselves as "Barrister and solicitor"

    Good luck

That is true, there are some distinctions though in terms of qualifications according to a source of mine.

A very good analysis of everything required to practice law in Australia is contained in either the March / April edition of the Law Gazette 2010. (you can download it for free from their main page)

My information re the NSW route came from Colum Gavin-Duffy, Law Society librarian fadó fadó, and a relative of the NSW Premier. I heard of one colleague who embarked on it, but don't whether he got his call to the UK bar.

My understanding is each state has it's own admission process (in some states barrister and solicitors are in a fused profession), but the state bars have agreed on a uniform process for assessing overseas applicants.

My understanding is an irish applicant will have to take exams in australian constitutional law (fair enough), and land law, unless "the applicant displays knowledge and experience of a Torrens registration system". This confuses me as the Registration of Title system in Ireland is a Torrens system and presumably all irish applicants ought to have experience of it.

Thank you all so much for your replies - extremely helpful.
I'm a mature student studying law - just trying to figure out my options after college.

If I find any additional info, I'll post it here.

    Many thanks again

    Hi All,

Could anyone offer further info on this?
I would like to try and move to Australia and start an apprenticeship there.
What does their traineeship consist of?
Would I have to do similar to FE1's?
    Could I start immediately?

Any advice would be great, I am finding it VERY difficult to figure this out from google searches as I find different information everywhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)
