Hi all. Looking for some informed advice. I am buying a Superb Greenline (base model) and want to change the standard wheels 16" to either 16" or 17" Alloys.
Would 17" Alloys 225x45 (they look great!)
    make the ride more uncomfortable
    produce more noticable road noise
greatly reduce my clearance (problems getting up the ramp on the ferry with load of wine :))
and reduce my fuel efficiency etc

or should I stick with the 16" 205x55 Alloys which have the same profile and size as the standard wheels but look a little small on a car this size. Thanks

Can you change the wheels at order time, or would the dealer do this? You might have trouble changing the wheels from factory as it could affect the CO2 emissions on the Greenline model.

If it's done by the dealer, it could cost quite a bit, as they'd have to buy each wheel seperate as a part (€200-€300 each) and if you are going 16 to 17 then you need bigger tyres to (€100 each). They may allow you some money against the wheels coming off, but most don't!

Thanks R.O.R. I am waiting for a price from the dealer so it might have a big influence on my decision. He is offering the 16" Alloys at €500 but wating on a price for the 17"!

When you speak to the salesman again ask him for the list price of the upgraded alloys.

If he says €500 then tell him to start again as you are not interested in paying list price.

List price is €590 but also getting a hitch included in the €500 :)

That's not soo bad. Reversing a Superb with a hitch in a tight multistorey will be fun.

Especially when you have a €2000 bike sitting on it:eek:. Focuses the mind:D

I am waiting on a new company car so may or may not have a tow hitch. Tow hitch if its a standard saloon or estate, no hitch if its a Skoda Octavia VRs. I have two bike racks, one tow bar rack and one standard rack however my back is worth €375. I was going to buy myself a nice Specialized Hardtrail but I lost my job.

I prefer the tow bar rack because it doesn't damage the paintwork and they are pretty secure. Also cheaper to buy. :)

Good luck with the new car. Superbs are nice and at €104 per year tax. :D

As ROR says, just be careful because as ROR says, the CO2 emmisions could be changed if you change the wheels from the factory.

I think I recently read that to lower C02 the cars have smaller wheels, thiner tyres which are pumped up to a higher PSI level so it makes sense that having a wider & bigger tyre will affect your C02.

I would imagine the greenline tyres would be something like the lower rolling resistance Michelins - if you change to 17s you should check what tyres are going to be on them. Maybe it doesnt matter to you though?

I really doubt it would ruin the ride, it will be slightly firmer alright but you will gain in terms of steering feel when turning into a corner (less of a sidewall = less compliance).

www.briskoda.net/forums would be a really good place to ask this question.

Hey the OP. I have the upgraded Skoda wheels on my Octavia 17''..225/45 which I got from the dealer. I would notice a change in comfort ride, as the profile is less so the bumps on the road are noticed more, also the higher PSI as the tyres are wider. If I would go again, I would go for the 16'' 205/55 for comfort. For the look, the 17'' do look good!

Reduce your ride height clearance, prob not
Fuel Effeciency, not much, also check what loads you have in the massive boot !!
    enjoy

Thanks for that batman2000, exactly what I was looking for. Can I ask what tyres were on the 17" wheels? Looks like I will stick with the 16".
Also thanks to all other posters for your help, suggestions and links.

@ Berty I'm sure you will buy that Specialized some day;)

I will probably be able to afford it by the end of the 2010 Season so I will try to get the end of Season price.

Apparently Im supposed to be saving for a 3 piece suite instead. Pah!

OP, any particular reason you must go for the Greenline and not for one of the other models?

I know the others are slightly higher in taxation(but 302 is hardly the ends of the earth, or is it?) but they are less compromised than the Greenline e.g. proper spare tyre rather than sealant, can have a towing hitch, standard suspension, even the salesman admitted that the Greenline was "geared down"(actually it is geared up) and was even slower than the standard versions with the 1.9 TDI engine.

We half thought about buying one on scrappage but didn't because of that.

Hey SY, yep they were Bridgestone Turanza (ER300 I think). I have Dunlop Maxx on them now, as the Bridgestone were €180 a corner !!

Hadn't realised that the suspension was different? Was aware of the gearing difference but didn't realise there was a big? difference between the standard 1.9 and the Greenline?.
Why the Greenline? Price basically and not the saving on motortax. Would love to buy the 140 CR but not available here at the moment. Seems like the ideal engine for this car, maybe next time around.

@Berty Remember that 3 piece suite is probably the only way to the bike! It will be nice to lie down on after a hard spin on the bike ;)

Unless you have very good roads around you I'd recommend sticking with 16". Low profile tyres on the larger wheels are easily damaged with the ridiculous state of the roads in our country. I lost two tyres in the space of 6 months. One was less than a week old!

Wow that looks nasty! Hope the wheel was ok. Thanks for that advice hmboards. Def going with the 16" alloys

Sy and hmboards...I had to replace two of my 225/45/17 as I got a bulge the same as hmboards as it just went over some "average" roads. I love the Octavia, I've had three and never failed unless you count dirty petrol !!. In fact I'm eyeing up a Superb next, Anthracite grey, Elegance spec with half cream interior minus the 225/24 tyres !!

Yeah that's the size of the two I lost in exactly the same way, a bulge on side wall. It's on an Octavia VRS. Thankfully no obvious damage to the wheels (or wheel - same one each time!)

My wheels are the same as the RS, came Skoda fitted. They look great but have cost a fortune and worry, it hard to tell if you have a flat/slow because of the low profile.....I might post a pic for ya SY

Stick with 16 in , Friend bought 2010 skoda superb and put largest wheels on it, he has to get a new tyre this morning, its the third new tyre since November @ 134 euro each for continentals, due to potholes hes now looking for smaller alloys for it,

Yes, yes, no and no. Unless appearances are more important to you than ability i'd stick with 16"s.
