Do you remember that episode of Father Ted...

Dougal; "Ted, I've just discovered an oil field off the coast of the island. We're going to be rich!!"

Ted; "It's not that simple Dougal. You see, oil is a very complicated thing - you need oil rigs, pipelines & other complicated stuff to get it out of the sea. And then it needs to be refined, before you can sell it & make any money out of it."

Dougal; "So what will we do Ted?"

Ted; "Well, we could try selling on the rights to it & make a percentage of the profits, but - ah, sure that'd be a lot of hassle & paperwork. I think we'd be better off just giving it away to a multi-national & forget about it."

Dougal ; "But how are we going to get rich, Ted, how?"

    Ted; "Housing Dougal, housing"

Actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure if that was from Father Ted, or from Oireachtas Report. I'm always confusing the two for some reason.

Wait a few years when the price of oil sky rockets. Then it'll be drilled out

I spent a few minutes trying to think of what episode that was and how prophetic Fr Ted really was.....

I was intrigued by this for a while, but then I remembered I live in Ireland, and no doubt something/someone will f*ck it up for us. It's always too good to be true for the Irish. Just watch, something bad will happen.

Of course that being said, if i'm wrong then I do hope we can invest some time and effort into this oil and do something useful with it.

Oh I dunno, watching all the crusties get worked up into a lather of outrage before being arrested and dragged away by the police kinda brings a smile to my face.

You might also get to enjoy some residents being arrested and dragged away for objecting to living beside a pipeline.
I mean, what could be their problem? There is no danger; as we've recently seen, these oil companies should be trusted implicitly.
Hopefully, we can also strike a deal that, ultimately, as in Mayo, will not benefit the county or the country in any meaningful way.
Only a crusty or hippy would even raise a question about any of this.
Better just to trust our masters; as we've seen, they know what's good for us.

Mayo man here. Contract should never have been given to Shell, but it was. And so its all legal and we have to live with that. The vast majority of the residents didn't mind, they got compo for the pipeline going through there land, which was as safe as it could be, the refinery was completely hidden on a small patch of hundreds of miles of coastline and it brought valuable work to the area.
Those protestors were acting against court orders, thought its fine to run up and kick a cop but were up in arms that their yooman rights were violated if they were moved off the road.
This is a democracy with laws where majority rules and laws will be followed (or at least should be)

Well, some did mind; and were dragged away and arrested when they protested.
Perhaps they should have bowed down to those who were happy to take some money or happy with benifiting from some short-term work.
Democracy? They didn't get a vote on this specific issue.
I don't blame them for objecting to this; it's easy to dismiss them as cranks or hippies or crusties
If you and your family had to live in the direct line of any possible danger would you not do the same?

I said that that shell should never have got the contract that they did but they did get that contract, a legally binding contract from our elected representatives (which is what happens when you vote FF) and if this conntract wasn't honoured no int'l company would ever look at Ireland again, and we need them like it or not.
And as for danger, those pipes are carrying a tiny psi as compared to their strength, the risk is minimal.
And as for the 'five', thats out of how many landowners and I believe most of them dont evem have land bordering the pipeline, they're just the usual vocalists who need something to be 'against'.
Ask the people in the locality is there a problem, most of them will be working there and happy about it.

Would you sleep safely at night in a house with your kids knowing the risk was 'minimal'?; a risk described as 'minimal' by a company that stands to make untold money and would easily take the financial pain if they got it wrong and you and your family were blown to smithereens.
Your relatives could sue for compensation, i guess; some consolation.
I know it's unlikely; still, i can't blame the people who actually have to live with the possibility for being, shall we say, uneasy, about the whole thing.
As for denigrating those who just don't shut up and go with the flow; we've had too much of that in this country and now it's on the brink of collapse.
I've no problem with you disagreeing with those people; what i objected to, in this thread, was the dismissal of them.
That they should be regarded as mere nuisances, unworthy of an opinion.
We have plenty people employed in our media who are all to anxious to paint them as such; would hope for a more nuanced view on here.

But its about as much a risk as living around an airport. And it wasn't even the landowners who had a problem, I'm just saying this from living close by, everyone is happy, the only thing they aren't happy with is these people making all the noise who apart from the five aren't even local.
They are entitled to their opinion but when there's tresspass and damage its another story.
we're kinda hijacking the thread here and we'll hardly agree on anything but I can see where you're coming from, just dont agree with it :)

I guess it's the age old argument of how far you will, or should, go to fight your corner; many civil rights battles would have been stillborn, if the initial instigators bowed to the argument of the few versus the many.
Or perhaps, as you attest, they are just wrong.
Not being in their position, i won't just assume they are and ridicule them, as was the general tenor of this thread. :)

Ah sure if oil is there the government will sell if off at thruppence to the barrel and we'll all be happy. We'll makes hundreds of euro's in profit with out the expense of actually having to drill it ourselves. Who could complain about that.
