Funny things that happened in class today ....

Today was the funniest class of the year by a long shot. I wanted to test the kids' ability to learn history through drawing historical scenes/art. I gave them all different images/scenes from history to draw, such as a Motte and Bailey, a medieval castle, a castle under siege, a manorial community, an early Christian monastery, a Norman knight in battle and so forth. They had to label all the features of it; it was not an art class. So, for instance, on their drawing they had to label all the weapons which the knight brought to battle, his clothing, his coat of arms. In the siege picture they had to draw all the various siege equipment - battering rams, tunnels etc - of medieval warfare and label them. And so on.

I got the images from our textbook and photocopied them for each student, allowing them to choose their scene. I had said that if they wanted to they could draw any other scene in the history book. So, everybody was working away at their scene - all of which were on medieval history. I was walking around the class and I saw a student drawing this super macho naked man with a protruding you-know-what. I looked at everybody else and the only people they were drawing were medieval knights in full battle dress but here was mo dhuine, who is always the most lost kid in the class, drawing a big muscular naked man with massive testicles. It was very well drawn, mind you.

I erupted in laughter. I never laughed so hard and the whole class turned around "Mr Dionysus is laughing!" and there was mo dhuine, the smallest kid in the class, immersed in his drawing. They saw me looking at Seán and the entire class was now laughing at his drawing. "Seán, that's an unusual looking Norman knight!" to which he replied "ah but he's cool, isn't he sir?". "He is, but you'll have to put labels all over it. This is a historical drawing so how are you going to label that (pointing to his drawing), Seán?", I enquired with a smile.

He moved his drawing and underneath it was his history book. And he pointed to an image at the start of the book, under Ancient Rome which we did last September. It was 'David' by Michaelangelo, this fellow.

And sure enough David's accomplishments were just as formidable as little Seán had noted in his drawing so I was in a dilemma and had to tell him that his was a very real drawing - brilliant work - but please label every single aspect of it with historical information. "Yes, Mr Dionysus" said he with a titter and a big grin as he pointed out David's well-endowed aspects to one of the kids next to him.

So, what moments in school have brought a smile to your face?
